Load up on party grub with a local twist like chilli crab fries and pork chop burgers by homegrown chef Bjorn Shen
As a loud and proud nation of foodies, there are plenty of Michelin-starred restos, award-winning cocktail bars and world-famous hawker centres to check out on our lil’ red dot. But one thing’s for sure – charismatic, talented homegrown chefs will always have a special place in our hearts (and stomachs), which is why we are especially excited for this ongoing collaboration between bad-boy culinary rebel, Bjorn Shen, and too-cool-for-school rooftop bar, Loof.
With its cheeky homages to local culture (complete with its own mama shop) and Southeast Asian-influenced cocktails and bar bites, it’s only natural that Loof has teamed up with local chef Bjorn Shen (also chef-owner of some of our fave joints, Artichoke and Bird Bird). With unapologetic mash-ups of local dishes and crowd-pleasing bar bites like bak chor mee grilled cheese and Hainanese pork chop burgers, it’s definitely a match made in food heaven. Here are some highlights.
Dig into the deliciously sinful B.C.M. Grilled Cheese – sourdough bread stuffed with cheese, pork mince and mushrooms, an ingenious take on the hawker fave, bak chor mee. Or try the Pork Chopper, a Hainanese pork chop cutlet encrusted with cream crackers sitting in between two brioche buns.
Prefer something lighter to share with your pals? Scoop up a dollop of ‘California maki’ mayo dip with crispy wanton skins, or chow down on the signature Chilli Crab Fries, now revamped as waffle-cut fries but drenched in the same well-loved housemade chilli sauce.
Or pair your cocktails with skewers like the Bacon Lollipop, thick pancetta nuggets coated with maple syrup, groundnuts and pho herbs; or have a nostalgic moment with the Twisties Charred Corn – curry-mayonnaise corn on the cob topped with shaved cheese.
The cocktail list at Loof also welcomes a few new additions, such as Kaya Lumpur, a tribute to the local breakfast staple consisting of pineapple rum, kaya, citurs, soda, house bitters, and fresh Thai basil. Another cocktail inspired by a breakfast mainstay is the Stylo Milo, a chocolate-y blend of spiced rum, Milo, roselle, hazelnut oil, orange and vanilla.
Stomachs growling already? Then swing by for a night of nostalgia, playfulness and ‘damn good food’, as Bjorn Shen would say.
