Faux or real, pearls are trending hard. We’re on board for this trendy twist on your grandmother’s jewellery...
Besides colourful birthstones and gemstones, pearls are making a comeback in the best way possible – with a modern update. We’re seeing them everywhere, from the red carpet to runways, and are starring in some of the most coveted fashion collections including mega luxe houses like Gucci and Fendi. Without looking old-fashioned (there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going vintage), it’s time to reimagine the way you wear your grandmother’s jewellery this year…
Pearl jewellery
First things first, let’s talk jewellery. Sculptural accessories and statement earrings are all the rage right now, and we’re obsessed. So what better way to make heads turn than a pair of Peranakan-inspired ear jackets and long necklaces from Carrie K’s latest Modern Heirloom collection, or something fun like these Aldo statement pearl earrings from ASOS?
If you lean towards classic elegance, check out Chomel’s collection of freshwater pearl classic studs and necklaces a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Lovisa, on the other hand, incorporates floral motifs and gorgeous designs into its line of faux pearl jewellery if you want to try the trend without making an investment.
Perfect for the minimalists, local jeweller By Invite Only has a plethora of dainty pearl beauties, including gold and rose gold double-layered necklace and bracelet sets. Local label Wabi Sabi offers pared-back black pearl and dogtooth pearl talisman necklaces, and UK label Lily & Roo’s single pearl bracelet is also fab for a everyday wear.
Hairspiration
Adorning your hair with headbands, head wraps, hair clips and flower crowns is nothing new. But channelling your inner classic-yet-preppy Blair Waldorf with pearl-embellished hair accessories is making waves right now. Even IT-girl Alexa Chung was spotted with Simone Rocha’s faux pearl-embellished hair slides. With pearl-adorned headbands and hair wraps for a boho-chic twist all over ASOS, it’s safe to say that pearl hair accessories aren’t just reserved for brides.
Arm candy
Not new to the scene, but definitely a must-have accessory: pearl-accented handbags. Fendi’s faux pearl-embellished leather crossbody is a great investment for an edgy, luxe look, while Alexander McQueen’s faux pearl-covered leather clutch is a work of art, perfect for elevating your classic LBD for an evening bash.
For an absolute standout, Shrimps’ Antonia boxed beaded bag caught our eye. But if you’re more into subtle details, Charles and Keith has got you sorted with its pearl-embellished boxy clutch.
Fresh threads
How can we talk fashion without mentioning clothes? With pearls making their way onto tops, bottoms and jackets, it’s about time you give your wardrobe an update. There are plenty of pearl-embellished sweaters out there, from designer 3.1 Phillip Lam’s cotton poplin-panelled ribbed-knit top to fast-fashion label Bershka’s sweater with pearl beads. Look hella stylish with Badgley Mischka’s ruffled cady jumpsuit and Nasty Gal’s bodycon dress, or go casual with Pull & Bear’s T-shirt with pearl-embellished pocket. For a statement look, these pearl leather biker jacket, oversized denim jacket and blazer from ASOS are absolute stunners.
But if there’s one brand you really need to look out for, it’s Mother of Pearl (pictured top and also available at Net-A-Porter) – need we say more?
Embellished shoes
Footwear decorated in pearls are everywhere, and your shoe cabinet can never lack any. Charles & Keith and Aldo will sort you out with sandals perfect for a day-to-night wear. But if you prefer going loud and proud, Gucci fits the bill with its signature mid-heel loafers, pearl-studded sneakers, and ankle boots. Fans of Miu Miu and Nicholas Kirkwood will also be well-acquainted with their line of pearl-decorated footwear that includes pearly heeled loafers and slides that will catch anyone’s attention – trust us.
