If you work in media or production, the Average Guys might hit a nerve. This Singapore-made comedy series has us hooked.
Finally, a local laugh-out-loud series that doesn’t make us cringe. While we’ve always depended on the usual schtick of dad jokes, slapstick comedy, and even casual racism as the mainstream idea “local humour”, the collective Average Guys have put out the first episode of a series that is a breath of fresh air in a landscape where “funny” often falls flat. Definitely one we’re adding to our binge-watch list of shows!
The premise is simple. Average Guys is a mockumentary that follows a fictional hotshot film company based in Singapore as they go about their production lives. While corporate videos are the main core of their workload, it is commercials and films that they aspire to be producing one day. That spiel sounds familiar to creatives?
What we get is a mix of strange characters who are a little unorthodox in their process of making videos. In the same vein as the popular UK (and US) TV series The Office, the style works in the way how self-awareness is what lies in this kind of comedic entertainment that incites an emotional discomfort that we fight hard to avoid. There’s a Malay character who gets forced to play the guitar all the time, even if he doesn’t even know how. It’s a jab at the run-of-the-mill local TV sitcoms where situations like that get called out as stereotyping. As a result of this discomfort, we avoid this by laughing it off.
But enough of hyping it up, watch it for yourself here. If it’s something you approve, the next episode drops in a couple of days, so stay tuned.
