Can you swap coffee, soda and alcohol with kombucha? I gave it a shot and here are the flavours that worked wonders!
There’s no need to wait for a new year before committing to a healthier lifestyle. When it comes to taking care of our bodies, eating well and exercising regularly are usually the top-of-mind goals. But, have you thought about drinking well? I’m talking about swapping caffeine, soft drinks and alcohol with a healthy and tasty drink. Enter: kombucha.
Before you flinch at the idea of fermented tea, hear me out. These aren’t your usual kombucha creations. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a convert until I tasted these unique flavours from Pourabucha! Taste aside, they’re filled with probiotics for better gut health and contain antioxidants that boost your immunity and give your skin a beautiful glow. They’re also hand-brewed locally in a Singapore Food Authority-licensed facility, so maximum hygiene and freshness is guaranteed. Here’s what I tried and loved…
Swap your high-caffeine brew for lavender lemon kombucha
Ahh, coffee. If you’ve been unsuccessfully trying to cut your caffeine intake, maybe going cold turkey isn’t the answer. Instead, switch out your morning brew for a glass of lavender lemon kombucha to give you a boost, with way less caffeine than your usual cup of joe. (250 ml from Pourabucha has just 10 to 15 mg of caffeine, compared to 80 mg in coffee.) This concoction, When In Doubt Chill Out, is made with white tea leaves from wild tea trees, 2,000 m above sea level – no expense is spared at procuring top-notch ingredients! Taken with the delicate notes of lavender and hint of zest from the lemon, this is undoubtedly my favourite flavour from Pourabucha.
Swap soda for cola-flavoured kombucha
We know soda is basically sugary water, but sometimes, we crave a flavoured drink for a midday pick-me-up. For a healthy drink alternative, I tried Pourabucha’s Grown-Up Cola. It doesn’t taste exactly like the cola we know, but it has a dash of cola-inspired notes and a natural fizz. The organic and biodynamic Darjeeling tea base will give you the musky-sweet caffeine boost you need, too.
Swap booze for wine and martini-inspired kombuchas
What do you do when you want to skip the alcohol? Stock up on wine and martini-flavoured kombucha! Toast To Me is the closest kombucha cordial you can get to wine, made with double fermentation of organic grapes. On the other hand, Mom Would Approve of the passion fruit creation that’s reminiscent of the UK’s famous pornstar martini, sans vodka. Personally, I like the latter as it features a lovely vanilla aroma that slightly masks the kombucha’s fermented flavour, which is great for those new to kombucha.
Fun fact: Mom Would Approve and the aforementioned When In Doubt Chill Out have both won a Gold Medal at the Singapore Taste Award (2021), a globally recognised accolade in recognition of products of the highest quality.
It’s never too late to hop on the healthy eating (and drinking) train! Give these unique kombucha flavours a go – your skin, gut and immunity will thank you.
