An auction to be held for a long lost Caravaggio Masterpiece – Judith and Holofernes on 27 June in Halle aux Grains, Toulouse, France.
Caravaggio was the leading Italian painter during his time, who became famous for his religious adaptions in his paintings based on the bible; and Judith and Holofernes, is a long-lost Caravaggio masterpiece that tells the Biblical story of Judith, who saved her people by seducing and beheading Holofernes.
The original painting was rediscovered by auctioneer Marc Labarbe five years ago in an attic in Toulouse, France. The authenticity of the rediscovered work is in exceptional condition for a painting dating from 1607. Scientific analyses also revealed a total concordance of the painting with the works of Caravaggio dating from 1600-1607 in both the preparation and the stages of execution.
This remarkable painting’s will be up for an exhibition at: Hotel des Ventes Saint-Aubin, Toulouse, Frame on 17 to 23 June 2019 before going live on auction.
The painting is estimated at €100-€150 million by Cabinet Turquin.
