Amanda Moo of Soul Good Project tells us about building a brand during the pandemic and finding the motivation behind starting a business.
We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a digital networking platform (with IRL benefits) that encourages connection, business support and community. It’s a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented folks! Looking for inspiration? Check out how Amanda Moo, the founder of Soul Good Project, gets it done like a boss.
Tell us the story behind your business.
Soul Good Project, established in 2019, began with natural deodorants and has expanded into home care, offering candles, diffusers, and room sprays crafted with plant-based ingredients to promote wellness and embrace conscious living.
What are some milestones or achievements you’re most proud of?
Launching my brand amidst the Covid-19 pandemic was transformative. From building my e-commerce site to mastering product formulation, each step taught me invaluable entrepreneurship lessons.
Introducing our natural deodorant balm challenged norms, fostering a shift towards healthier choices. Witnessing its popularity and positive impact on consumer mindset has been rewarding. Our commitment to plant-based ingredients in home care, like candles with ingredients and fragrances safe for inhalation, reflects a dedication to customer well-being.
Participating in Boutique Fairs and securing Design Orchard spots were significant milestones, affirming our brand’s credibility and growth potential. As an entrepreneur, my journey aims to inspire, innovate, and contribute to a healthier, sustainable future.
Share with us a setback that taught you a valuable lesson about running a business.
One crucial lesson I learned is the importance of always being prepared for the worst when it comes to suppliers. Rushing into partnerships without thoroughly vetting their reliability can lead to unforeseen setbacks, such as issues with product quality or delayed deliveries, ultimately resulting in financial losses and customer dissatisfaction.
This experience taught me the significance of taking time to carefully research and evaluate potential suppliers, ensuring they have a track record of reliability and quality. By being proactive and prioritising thorough vetting processes, we can better mitigate the risks associated with supplier partnerships and ensure smoother operations in the long run. This mindset of preparedness has become a guiding principle in our approach to supplier relationships, emphasising the importance of safeguarding against potential challenges to maintain the trust and satisfaction of our customers.
Describe a typical day in your life and what you love most about it.
My day begins with a ritual of affirmations and prayers, setting a positive tone for the hours ahead. This grounds me and fills me with gratitude, guiding my intentions and actions throughout the day. I love starting the day with podcasts as new knowledge and insights will enrich my day and the week ahead.
Before the week begins, I plan my to-dos, ensuring I stay focused and efficient in balancing my full-time job and business responsibilities. This organised approach sets the course for a productive week ahead.
What I love most about this routine is the harmonious blend of learning and productivity. It sets the stage for a day filled with growth, connection, and meaningful progress towards my business and personal goals.
What’s your favourite book, movie, or TV show that has influenced your entrepreneurial mindset?
Robin Sharma’s The 5 AM Club has been my favourite book since I started my business, teaching me that with determination and habits, any desire can be achieved.
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to deeply understand why you want to start a business. If your motivation is solely for quick profits and not for the long-term journey of building something meaningful, entrepreneurship may not be the right path for you.
Top tip for maintaining a good work-life balance?
Establish clear boundaries by setting dedicated timeframes for your work and personal life, and commit to respecting those boundaries consistently.
Favourite thing to do on weekends?
My favourite thing to do during weekends is to enjoy breakfast with my loved ones, whether it’s my husband or close friends, while engaging in meaningful conversations.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself that not many people know.
