So we’ve done our list of top eating spots on one side of the short cut [a non-yellow brick road that divides Canggu in two], but how about cafes and restaurants on the Batu Bolong side? There are some seriously good spots for fresh and healthy vegetarian grub, Italian feasts, Mexican delights, and so much more!
Taco Thursdays: Lacalita
Actually, you should come here any day of the week – Lacalita has to be one of the best evening spots for dining out with friends. With a lively atmosphere, awesome Mexican food and tasty cocktails it is the perfect place for a birthday party, especially if you book the long table that can seat your whole gang.
Lacalita, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.68, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 822 4731 2217.
Local Grub: Dandelion
Dandelion has to be the cutest place to eat in Canggu – I mean; they have bunny rabbits hopping around the garden for goodness sake! This cute little spot serves authentic Indonesian food that is on the higher end to that of the local warungs. We also love the fact your designated waitress/waiter will call you by your first name throughout your meal [it’s the little touches].
Dandelion, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.8, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 896 2296 5413.
Best Brekkie: Crate
Hipsters alert! This is one of the most popular breakfast hotspots in Canggu… Why? Maybe it’s the awesome beats of the soundtrack or maybe it’s just that the food is seriously good. ‘Peas Please’ has to be up there with one of the best ways to start your day in Bali; spinach, feta and peas on sourdough bread with a poached egg on top.
Crate, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No. 60, Canggu.
Hangover Munchies: Canteen
With its funky retro surf vibe Canteen gives Crate a run for its money in the ‘cool’ department. With the new sign outside stating ‘Hipsters, Beards and Hippies Welcome’… you can’t miss it. If you’ve had one too many cocktails at newly opened Black Shores this is the perfect place to come for a hangover breakfast, especially as it serves brekkie all day long!
Canteen, Jalan Batumejan No. 33, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 878 6228 1755.
Surfer’s Paradise: Old Man’s
Old Man’s is Canggu’s main surfer hang out so don’t be surprised if you see a number of half-naked men hanging here [fine by us…!]. They serve a mean granita [and we love the fancy glass it comes in] and a tasty Chicken Caesar Salad. Lounge on a bean bag, soak up the surfer vibes and enjoy their happy hour [from 5-6pm every night]. A visit to Canggu is not complete without a visit to Old Man’s.
Old Man’s, Batu Bolong Beach Front, Canggu.
Date night: La Baracca
If you are in need of a little comfort food, La Baracca is the place to go. You will be blown away with the authentic Italian flavours they absolutely nail. Designed like a [fancy] shed, La Baracca is your home away from home. Enjoy a crisp glass of white wine and a flavourful pasta dish overlooking a sea of rice paddy greenery whilst surrounded by its rustic décor and quirky accessories.
La Baracca, Jalan Tanah Barak, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 361 471 5283.
Vegan Delight: The Shady Shack
One of Canggu’s newbies, The Shady Shack is for all the vegans out there. The food is healthy and colourful, and extremely filling [so even if you aren’t a veggie you will still enjoy a meal here]. Sit in their garden, which is shaded by surrounding tropical greenery, and enjoy some healthy goodness.
The Shady Shack, Jalan Tanah Barak No.57, Canggu.
Beautiful Brunch: Betelnut
This has to be one of the most popular spots in Canggu – we are averaging about three Baja Burritos a week these days [the obsession is real!] . The food is healthy, colourful and fresh, which is not surprising as it’s the Shady Shack’s older sister. The space has a treehouse-kinda-vibe which overlooks the green rice paddies, perfect for a cosy dinner date or getting the gang together for brunch.
Betelnut, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.60, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 821 4680 7233.
People Watch: Little Flinders
You are drawn in by the big bright sign, which is impossible to miss at night time whilst driving down Batu Bolong on your scooter. Be sure to check out their awesome healthy breakfast menu, including egg-white omelettes, and enjoy the atmosphere on their quaint upstairs terrace.
Little Flinders, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.76, Kuta, p. +62 (0) 361 471 5238.
Hipster Hangout: Dues
If you are in Canggu on a Tuesday, you can’t miss out on Tacos-n-Tatt-Tuesdays… yep, you buy some tasty tacos and you get a free tattoo [and you were wondering why Canggu is becoming known as the hipster hangout of Bali!]. If you don’t fancy a taco [or a tatt], the menu offers awesome food from creamy pasta dishes to perfectly done pumpkin soup, not to mention the naughty but nice mozzarella sticks!
Deus, Jalan Batu Mejan No. 8, Canggu, p. +62 (0)361 368 3395.
Pizza Fix: Pizza House
Those needing their pizza fix need to visit Pizza House, which serves perhaps the best wood-fired pizzas in Canggu. Starting at just IDR 25,000 you can get all sorts of varieties and flavours, plus their wine and cocktail selection provides the perfect accompaniment to wash it down with! Eat in their cosy garden, or take away.
Pizza House, Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 361 797 7790.
Health Nut: Café Avocado
Another healthy hotspot to try! Café Avocado serves lots of vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free dishes and raw dishes [they even have gluten-free bread]. Sip on a delicious juice or smoothie, see off a wheatgrass shot and munch on a vegan salad. We love that they also have a designated paleo section on their menu, great for all those health nuts out there!
Café Avocado, Jalan Batu Bolong 69B, Canggu.
Girls Night: Gypsy
Another new restaurant on the Canggu block, Gypsy is one not to miss, especially if you are a fan of pork belly, hip hop music and decent cocktails! Located on the same road as Bali Fit, it is a small space decorated with contemporary and urban touches, with the option to dine indoors or outside on their little terrace. Get the sharing menu and enjoy over cocktails with the girls!
Gypsy, Jalan Munduk Catu #1, Canggu, p. +62 (0) 812 3067 0056.
French Treats: Monsieur Spoon
If you want fresh croissants go to Monsieur Spoon! Go early one morning when the sun is not too hot, sit outside in their cute garden and enjoy a coffee and pastry. Monsieur Spoon has more of a sophisticated vibe – great for a brunch with the in-laws!
Monsieur Spoon, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong no. 55, Canggu, p. +62 (0)878 6280 8859.
Aloha: Poke Poke
Just next to Betlenut , Poke Poke is a cute and quirky place with colourful Hawaiian décor and awesome props to spice up your Insta photos! They serve authentic Hawaiian ahi poke bowls which you can customise to your liking with white or brown rice, quinoa or salad.
Poke Poke, Jalan Batu Bolong 58, Canggu.
Sushi Sunsets: Ji at Bale Sutra
Located in the Tugu Hotel is this brand new Japanese restaurant. Head to the upstairs lounge where you will find awesome views of the Indian ocean, and feast on a delicious selection of sushi and dishes such as the crab and fennel Wakame Salad or the Pork Belly with sweet potato, ginger scallion.
