From breakfast to dinner, coffee to cocktails, meat feasts to vegan delights, the number of places to eat in Berawa grows by the day. With cool and quirky restaurants and cafes popping up each month, this quieter neighbourhood of Canggu is giving Echo Beach a run for its money in the food stakes! Here are our favourite places in Berawa to get our munch on when those hunger pains kick in.
Peloton Supershop
Vegans unite! This popular spot is a haven for vegetarians and vegans alike, and even for non-veggies it is worth a visit. The creamy cheesy lasagne for example… how can something taste so delicious when it’s so good for you? Thank the lord for cashew cheese! The menu was created in collaboration with Indonesian/Australian Lauren Camilleri, a Vegan and Foodie, and together they’ve nailed it. Great food in a laid back atmosphere. Peloton, Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa, No. 46, Canggu, p. +62 (0)859 5413 1451.
Coffee ‘n’ Oven
Coffee and pastries… Need we say more? If you are looking for that perfect mid-morning catch up with a girlfriend over naughty treats then head to Coffee ‘n’ Oven – a cool little bakery that doubles up as a great café. German owned, they know exactly how to make authentic breads, pastries, cakes, jams, yoghurts, juices and sandwiches. All fresh that day, you can eat in or take them away. Coffee ‘n’ Oven, Jalan Pantai Berawa No 51, Canggu, p. +62 (0)821 1288 8727.
Sprout
Green omelettes, fresh croissants, salad bowls big enough to feed a family of five and giant cookies. Sprout is our go-to, and every time we visit we are tempted into trying something new! Enjoy great coffee and healthy food, in a fresh airy space. Plus you get to oooh and aaaah over the cute kids walking past to go to The Garden Kids Club next door. Sprout, Jalan Raya Semat 18A, Canggu.
Taco Loco
We just can’t miss this off our list of fave spots to eat in Berawa – their food is too good! They have all the Mexican classics on the menu but each has a little Taco Loco twist, like their Mexican Pineapple for instance – stewed in cinnamon butter and coconut crusted, then deep fried to perfection. They are also open for breakfast, so if you fancy peanut butter & jam with banana in a toasted flatbread [say whaaat!] then pay them a visit to start your day the sweet way. Taco Loco, Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa No.48, Canggu, p. +62 (0)812 3900 3930.
RUKO Café
One question… Have you tried their pulled pork eggs Benedict yet? If you haven’t, DO IT NOW. This cool little spot oozes an urban style [giving all those expats the much needed feeling of living in the big city] and they just get it when it comes to breakfast and brunch. It is the perfect place to grab a delicious dish after a surf at Berawa beach, plus they do a great iced latte! Ruko, Jalan Pantai Berawa 99, Canggu p. +62 (0)852 0556 9033.
Bungalow Living Café
Those who are familiar with Bungalow Living know all too well an afternoon spent browsing through their wonderful collection of homewares is an afternoon well spent! But shopping isn’t all they do – they also have a cute café serving delicious smoothies, juices, great coffee and yummy food. Sit outside on the shaded patio or head inside into the cosy space and relax. Just be warned, you will want to buy something from their treasure trove of goodies! Bungalow Living Café, Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa No.35, Canggu, p. +62 (0)361 8446 567.
Milk & Madu
An absolute fave amongst everyone living in Canggu, Milk & Madu is a lush spot with alfresco dining under shade, but also with the option to sit in the garden area [if you can hack the heat!]. A picnic blanket with toys is laid out in the garden for the little ones to entertain themselves, so you can sit back and enjoy their many fab dishes and get your coffee fix. The team work closely with acclaimed barista, Katie Allen from Revolver, who provide arguably the best coffee in Bali! And if that wasn’t enough, they even have a Nalu Bowls counter for all those smoothie bowl cravings. Milk & Madu, Jalan Pantai Berawa #52, Canggu, p. +62 851 0278 1872.
Cinta Café
The best thing about Cinta Café has to be the view – the space overlooks beautiful rice paddies providing a relaxing and oh-so-Bali vibe. It’s a great spot for brekkie, our fave dish being the avocado stuffed with fresh salsa made from diced tomato, feta and quinoa with artisanal bread – healthy, delicious and the perfect amount to fill you up before you hit Berawa beach for some sun and surf! Cinta, Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu.
MaCan Café
With oodles of space, this is the perfect place to hang out all morning and let your taste buds get the treat they deserve. Their menu covers all day eating but we keep going back for the brekkies! I mean, they totally nail the Norwegian: runny poached eggs, delicate brioche, smoked salmon, hollandaise sauce, plus a side of creamy avocado mash, delish! The interior of MaCan Café is urban stylish – you’ll walk away with a new-found appreciation for lamps after a visit here! MaCan Cafe, Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu, p. +62 (0)812 3800 9970.
Balifornia Republic
What we love about Balifornia Republic is their commitment to local fresh produce and supporting local businesses. And it helps that their food is da bomb! If you are a fish fan then tuck into the swordfish burrito and the raw tuna, and if you are a vegan then try their many tempeh dishes. Great food and a cheeky vibe – we love! Balifornia Republic, Jalan Pantai Berawa no. 265, Canggu.
One Eyed Jack
With a chef who is ex-Nobu you know you are on to a winner! One Eyed Jack is a modern Japanese Izakaya and Sake Bar, offering a mix of traditional classics and modern Japanese dishes, including Spicy Tuna Bites, Red Snapper Sashimi Plate, Hamachi Jalapeno Sashimi Plate, Miso Black Cod, Rock Shrimp Tempura, and Tsukune Yakitori. All washed down with refreshing Japanese beer, cocktails, whisky and not forgetting the extensive Sake selection! One Eyed Jack, Pantai Berawa, Berawa Beach, Canggu, p. +62 (0)819 9929 1888.
Quince
This big, bright café with fabulous food and a homey vibe is the perfect place to unwind for some ‘you’ time. We love their commitment to local produce, for example they serve F.R.E.A.K. coffee which is an organic and sustainable brand from local farmers from the Kintamani region of Bali. We also love the hand-printed walls, adorned with tropical green plants and shelves full to the brim with beautiful homewares, like cushions and terracotta pots. Shop whilst you eat, yes please! Quince, Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu.
Green Ginger Noodle House
Noodle House Vegetarians rejoice! Green Ginger Noodle House, the sister of Ubud’s famed vegetarian restaurant, The Elephant, offers an array of vegetarian dishes inspired by south-east Asia cuisine, so we are talking wontons, laksas, Singapore noodles and slippery Vietnamese soups. Yum! Their ethos is to create healthy and delicious food without compromising the planet… not a bad ethos to live by we say! The small space is colourfully cluttered with pots, pans and plant life; you get the picture! Green Ginger Noodle House, Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa, Canggu, p. +62 (0)878 62112729.
Trattoria
Trattoria is bit of a ‘celeb’ in Bali’s resto scene – with over 20 restaurants on the island in total it has become known to expats, tourists and locals as the go-to for Italian food, at a reasonable price. Take the kids jumping at popular Bounce at the Canggu Club for the afternoon followed by a trip to Trattoria for some pizza – a perfect day out for the little ones! [Just don’t do it the other way around!]. Trattoria, Canggu Club Bali, Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu.
La Laguna
Now technically La Laguna isn’t on Jalan Pantai Berawa but it is so close and so good we just couldn’t leave it off our fave spots to eat at in the area! So, where to start? The gorgeous beachfront location provides the perfect backdrop for enjoying those heavenly Bali sunsets! Sip on their tasty cocktails whilst you graze on seriously good tapas, and take in the awesome vintage and nik nac decor around you. Plus the gypsy carts adorning the entrance make a great Insta snap! La Laguna is a must for sundowners! La Laguna, Berawa beachfront, Canggu, p. +62 (0)361 474 1214.
La Finca
Another Berawa border must! La Finca is located just around the corner from La Laguna, so not technically in Berawa but we just couldn’t leave it out. Enjoy their rustic Mediterranean dishes, drinks and atmosphere and escape normal Bali life for a few hours. And, with the recent launch of their Paella and Sangria Sundays, this place just got even better! End your weekend on a high by indulging in a jug [or three] of sangria and all you can eat paella… We can feel the food coma coming on already! La Finca, Jalan Subak Sari #77, Banjar Tegal Gundul, Canggu, p. +62 (0)361 210 5080. Top image: Milk & Madu
