Bartender, Bar Manager and Consultant

Running my own business, building the right team, and gaining more knowledge... It is important to keep in mind why I started, and to feel grateful for this progress.
Tell us your story – how did you get here?
My name is Jordy Putra Gunawan, and I’m from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. My experience in hospitality started in The Slow – a designer boutique hotel in Canggu – in 2017 as a bartender. Then, a year later, I was promoted to Bar Manager.
In this role, I was responsible for menu creation, cocktail preparation, stock management, team direction and customer service. I have since gone forward to manage other renowned restaurants and bars in Bali, as well as taking on the role of bar consultant for menu creation with food pairing, bar process and set-up, equipment recommendation and sourcing, as well as staff training.
I have product and hospitality industry knowledge that I am passionate to share with new and established F&B businesses. I provide a systematic approach to everything that I do. I also look to create a friendly vibe and contact with the guests, to ensure a good experience for all.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Developing new flavours and creating my own identity from scratch in hospitality.
What impact have you made in Bali?
I might say in my bartending career, I have created my own community who always come and support me wherever I’m working.
What does the future look like for you?
Running my own business, building the right team, and gaining more knowledge, while at the same time, reminding myself it is important to keep in mind why I started and to feel grateful for this progress.
What do you love most about Bali?
For me all the simple things: the traditional music, dogs, the freedom to be who you are as a person, the culture, food, but most of all being surrounded by humble people.
What makes the perfect drink, and why?
Simple looks, characters, local ingredients, method and balance from the layer of flavour that you haven’t tried before. It’s because everyone has their own style to create something and how important it is to balance it in order to deliver the right flavour and to tell an interesting story behind it.
Who is your Local Legend and why?
I would like to share two of my close friends who are originally from Bali and have such amazing talent: Putu Pratama & Lanang.
