American football? Bah! When it comes to scrumming, tackling and scoring, we’ll stick with rugby, thank you very much. And if you’re a raving rugger, then surely, this is one event that you’ve been waiting for all year. You guessed it: the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens is set to tear the roof off the Singapore National Stadium, with 16 of the globe’s top teams – hailing everywhere from Argentina and Kenya, to Australia and Japan – battling it out to clinch fame and glory. But you won’t just find fun on the playing field; expect one slobber-knocker of a rugby carnival for peeps of all sorts, whether you’re a psyched-up rugby fanatic or a ‘noob’ who knows nothing of the sport. With a full-throttlin’ theme this year dubbed “Let’s Rock, Ruck & Rumble”, you’d best hold on to your hats for what’s in store!
Rockin’ Through The Soundwaves
What’s possibly louder than thousands of spectators cheering at the top of their lungs? How about devastating decibels of bass-booming, synth-flaring EDM courtesy of possibly the most important DJ in the world today. Superstars like David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Alesso have one person to thank for boosting their careers across the world – and his name is Pete Tong. Yup, the BBC Radio 1 legend will be turning the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens into one giant rave, as he’s slated to perform on the opening night of the tournament. The phrase “It’s all gone Pete Tong” is synonymous with the dance industry for a reason!
Ruckin’ With Activities Galore
It’s not just the players who get all the fun. Catch a break between matches, and visit the Fun Zone that’ll cater to all your rugby fandom tendencies. An amateur but wanna take a shot at the sport? Head to the Rugby Challenge Zone where you can Pass, Catch, Kick and Scrum Like A Pro – who knows, you might just tap into a hidden talent of yours! But if you’re convinced you’re already a pro, put yo’ money where yo’ mouth is and test your abilities at the Skills Challenge Zone. We hear there’ll also be an Inflatable Rugby Bungee and a Swing Bag Obstacle Course, and even a kids section to drop off your lil’ tots while they get entertained with arts & crafts sessions, air-brush tattoos and bouncy castles. Just don’t have too much fun here and forget about the game!
Rumblin’ With A Cause
Fun and games aside, the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens also hopes to assist the future of rugby youths, with training clinics organised by top players and programmes to teach local players the essential tenets of rugby. There’s also gonna be a charity gala dinner to raise funds for the needy, and a community engagement programme to encourage volunteers to take part.
Rugby is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life, and there’s no better place to witness this camaraderie than at the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens. If you’re not a fan of this high-octane sport yet, you will be once you give this spectacle a try.
