With top dance parties at Kilo Lounge, Zouk, Bang Bang, CÉ LA VI and more, our Rave & Repeat list for May is looking pretty stacked
We’re already looming closer to the halfway mark of 2017, so ask yourself: how much partying have you done so far this year? If you can’t remember, then it’s clear you haven’t done enough; thankfully, May is mighty full of parties. There’s a pool party in Orchard Road, a reggae jamboree near Aliwal Street, Sunday at The Shed, big-room boogies in Altimate and Bang Bang, and even an underground pop-up party at St. John’s Island. Take your pick; it’s gonna be mental.
Hyenah: 5 May at Kilo Lounge
When it comes to quality house music, it’s no laughing matter for this globetrotting enigma. The masked DJ returns to our shores for a stirring deep house aesthetic that’s landed him residencies in Berlin’s Watergate. Except salvoes of thumping African percussions in his set too.
Hyenah, 5 May, Kilo Lounge, 21 Tanjong Pagar Road, Singapore 088444. $20 at the door.
Rootikal Jam: 5 May at Artistry
Where dem reggae rudebois and gyals be at? The Rastafarian movement in Singapore led by Dub Skank’in Hifi continues going strong with this tropical party at Artistry. Alongside skank-friendly live music from the 10-piece Instigator Afrobeat Orchestra, this bashment will feature dub and dancehall DJ sets from residents Rumshot and Ras Irie.
Rootikal Jam, 5 May, Artistry, 17 Jalan Pinang, Singapore 199149. Entry at $5.
Lemonade Pool Party: 6 May at Bar Canary
A rooftop bar with one of the city’s best ladies nights in the heart of Orchard, Bar Canary is one waterhole that consistently makes nightlife animals sing. But this nightspot is now singing another tune: enter the Lemonade Pool Party, organised by promoters, Friends With Benefits, that promises a daytime jamboree (starts at 3pm) with splashworthy shenanigans and house music from DJs Brendon P, More, and I.M.X.
Lemonade Pool Party, 6 May, Bar Canary, Grand Park Orchard, 270 Orchard Road, Singapore 238857. $20 (incl. one drink).
3riple Bass: 6 May at Altimate
A familiar name and go-to, post-work haunt amongst CBD warriors is 1-Altitude, a multi-concept hideaway that’s also home to this club with a view on the 61st floor, Altimate. Manning the decks on this night will be a triple threat from its resident DJs – Big M, Rattle, and Lorri – with a hard-hitting selection of hip-hop classics and big-room bombshells.
Altimate presents 3riple Bass, 6 May, Altimate, Level 61 One Raffles Place, 1 Raffles Place, Singapore 048616. $30 (incl. one standard house pour), $40 (incl. two standard house pour), and $45 (all access and two standard house pour).
Culoe De Song: 6 May at Kilo Lounge
Another dancefloor bigshot for Kilo Lounge this month is one of South Africa’s hottest house exports. Hovering about the deep and techy spectrums of house with precision is Culoe De Song, who’s not only an alum of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy, but also a signee of Dixon’s and Âme’s revered Innervisions label.
After Dark presents Culoe De Song: 6 May, Kilo Lounge, 21 Tanjong Pagar Road, Singapore 088444. $20 at the door.
Lior Brosh: 6 May at Bang Bang
Despite having recently opened their new jazzy lounge, Lulu’s Lounge, the suave power duo behind it aren’t resting on their laurels with their other baby, Bang Bang. Kicking off May with a bang (couldn’t resist this one) is Lior Brosh, an EDM powerhouse and MTV EMA winner for Best Israeli Act as one part of TripL. As a solo DJ, he’s even opened for the likes of Avicii and R3hab.
Lior Brosh, 6 May, Bang Bang, Pan Pacific Singapore, 7 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039595. Cover charge applies.
Gerd Janson: 7 May at Headquarters by The Council
Lemme start off by saying that I caught this German veteran after being floored by Midland in Melbourne’s Pitch Festival, and he absolutely brought me back to life. Busting out a hybrid set of house and techno – with peekaboo spurts of disco, no doubt influenced by his role as one half of Tuff City Kids – Janson is one act I told myself I’d see again, and Headquarters by The Council has granted my very wish.
Gerd Janson, 7 May, Headquarters by The Council, Lvl 2, 66 Boat Quay, Singapore 049854. $20 before midnight, $30 after midnight.
Above & Beyond: 12 May at Zouk
Trance fam, this one’s calling out to all of you. Before you cynics declare that trance is dead, head to Singapore’s most iconic superclub and let these trance titans prove you wrong. These legendary Brits are one of the frontrunners of the transcendent, melody-heavy, hook-soaring genre; and with almost two decades of experience under their belt, they’ll surely take you to a magical place… and beyond.
EP!C presents Above & Beyond, 12 May Zouk, 3C River Valley Road, The Cannery, Singapore 179022, p. 6738 2988. Entry at $55 (for non-members).
DJ Marky: 13 May at Canvas
If there’s one aspect of Canvas that’s been consistent, it’s its staunch support of the drum & bass scene. And that’s why it’s bringing down yet another d&b champion all the way from Brazil, DJ Marky. Icon of the beat-chugging, fast-tempo genre, Marky brings with him over two decades of experience and a repertoire that’s roped in the likes of Fatboy Slim and Claude VonStroke.
Sound System feat. DJ Marky, 13 May, Canvas, The Riverwalk, #B1-01/06, 20 Upper Circular Road, Singapore 058416, p. 9169 3815. $22 (presale with one drink) and $35 (door price with one drink).
Bingo Players: 13 May at CÉ LA VI
The rooftop club, lounge and restaurant atop Marina Bay Sands came out triumphant when it bagged the #80 spot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs list. Why? Because not only does it boast a jawdropping view and top-notch facilities, but it also brings in top EDM heavyweights like Bingo Players in May. Will you expect pummelling beats and giga-sized drops at this gig? Bingo.
V Series 14 with Bingo Players, 13 May, CÉ LA VI, SkyPark, Marina Bay Sands Tower 3, 1 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018971, p. 6688 7688. $20 presale and $30 at door.
Sidney Charles: 13 May at kyō
As hyper as a hurricane – that also happens to be his real name – the productions of Sidney Charles are ones that any dancefloor deviant would eat up. With UK-friendly jackin’ beats, sticky basslines and smooth vocal samples, Charles’ grooves are set to stir up a storm in the kyō basement. He will be supported by Malaysian upstarts, Obadius and OtherKind.
Art Xtreme Media 2nd Anniversary presents Sidney Charles, 13 May, kyō, 33 Cecil Street, Singapore 069535, p. 8299 8735. $28 (incl. two drinks).
The Pool Side by Solid Gold & Lion Steppaz: 14 May at Owl Bar
One of our fave hidden boogie venues – it’s on the fringes of Tiong Bahru – Owl Bar is hosting yet another pool party while bringing out the big guns. They’ve invited not one, but two promoters to curate a swagger-y soundtrack of hip-hop and reggae, handpicked by Solid Gold Production and Lion Steppaz Sound respectively. Did we mention this one’s family-friendly too?
The Pool Side by Solid Gold & Lion Steppaz, 14 May, Owl Bar, 2 College Road, Singapore 169850. RSVP for entry.
Sunday at The Shed: 14 May at The Shed
If you haven’t been to the rebooted version of Sunday at The Training Shed in Labrador Park, you have another chance this May. Supported by residents Shellsuit and Stew Bamrah is DJ Woody, an award-winning turntablist who dishes out hip-hop, soul and disco – a soundtrack you’d always expect to hear at these alfresco, family-friendly parties.
Sunday at The Shed, 14 May, The Shed, Labrador Park, 8 Port Road, Singapore 117540. Free entry.
Shall Ocin: 27 May at Kilo Lounge
Kilo’s sure on a roll this month! May also sees the arrival of Argentina’s Shall Ocin, whose shuddering and steely techno releases have been picked up by the likes of Scuba’s Hotflush and Maceo Plex’s Ellum imprints. This one’s gonna be a bumpy ride, so loosen up before! He’ll be opened by Singapore’s very own (and Headquarters by The Council resident) Cats On Crack.
Shall Ocin, 27 May, Kilo Lounge, 21 Tanjong Pagar Road, Singapore 088444. $20 at the door.
Blackout x After Dark present Island Escape: 27-28 May at St. John’s Island
This dream collab brings together Blackout, the brainchild of party nomad, Zig Zach (if you’re not familiar, he’s thrown some of the illest parties in the most unfathomable of locations); and After Dark, the pet project of Joshua Adjodha who’s been responsible for grooming the Kilo brand into what it is today. And instead of throwing this next shindig at Kilo Lounge or another mysterious warehouse that Zig Zach has dug up, they’re doing a biggie on… wait for it, St. John’s Island. Holy smokes, right? Read here for the full deets.
Blackout x After Dark present Island Escape, 27 and 28 May, St. John’s Island. For more information on tickets and lineup, stay updated to its official Facebook page.
