Heading to Penang? Check out our video for the full lowdown on all things kids and cool on this sunny island…
Living in Southeast Asia, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to quick getaways with the family. And more often than not, we find ourselves thinking of the beach because, after all, the allure of golden sands and crystal-clear waters ticks all the boxes when it comes to a vacay with kids. If you’re planning your next family holiday, we say try something different and head to the island of Penang!
We’re talking beautiful beaches, a hefty dose of fam-friendly culture and a delish foodie scene to boot. But don’t just take our word for it, take a peek at our video for a taste of what to expect when you visit this glittering gem on the Andaman Sea.
How to get to Penang
When you’re travelling with kids, you’d definitely want to skip the 10-hour bus ride and opt for a 1.5-hour flight. And since Penang is a popular (for good reason) destination, there are plenty of direct flights on a daily basis from Singapore.
Why Penang?
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway sans kids or bringing the whole fam along, there’s bucketloads of exploring (and eating) in Penang. Fun fact: Thanks to its thriving art and cultural scene and luscious greenery, Penang’s capital George Town was recognised as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008. Culture, scenery and a great family vibe: Penang has it all in spades.
Whether you choose to spend the afternoons strolling along the heritage streets of George Town, snacking on delectable handmade kueh, wolfing down a plate of hor fun or taking in the uber Instagrammable famous street art (and snapping a few selfies along the way), there’s no shortage of things to do in Penang. Add bustling flea market and night market shopping opportunities to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a fab holiday to remember for sure.
Our personal fave spots around the island include the eclectic kitsch of Peranakan architecture, where you’ll spot heritage houses including the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. And if it’s lunch with a view you’re after, then make sure you take the Penang Hill Railway to the top of Penang Hill: sublime. Our fave? David Brown’s, a British colonial spot with a view and menu that can’t be beaten.
Even if you’re short on time but still want to make the most of your time in Penang, make sure you head over to Made In Penang Interactive Museum: it’s filled with magical murals and gorgeous displays to satiate the biggest history buffs and intrigue the kiddos (if you have them in tow).
