U will love it
Avid followers of The U Press and Underscore mag, the folks behind your favourite reads, are bringing you the 21st century rendition of (the equally cool) Andy Warhol’s 1960s Factory concept – The U Factory.
These creative curators have really outdone themselves by bringing together the best of the world’s creative people and their collaborations. Enough tantalizing, here’s what to expect from the eclectic mix of trailblazers of the art, film, music, food, design, and cultural world.
If you don’t know Monocle (oh, it’s just a world-renowned media house), it’s time to get acquainted via your favourite activity – shopping. Their pop-up retail store even has guest baristas on rotation, so you get to slurp hand-crafted drinks while perusing the library of international independent magazines (Acne Paper? Score!).
Home to local indie acts Sonicbrat, Asphidistrafly and Hanging Up The Moon, homegrown music company, Kitchen Label, will be taking The U Factory by storm with their first ever Singapore showcase in December. If you’re still in the mood to support local talent, retail gallery Creative Cultures is a great place to discover the work of designers, authors, and artists – shop uniquely Singaporean products like furniture from Grafunkt and Foundry, and stationery from FARM.
Art aficionados, Indonesian artist Boedi Widjaja has a special, interactive art exhibition (created just for The U Factory) – Drawing Cage – up his sleeves, so remember to check it out. We think Frames, a kinetic art installation (on mobiles, no less!) by Shigeki Fujishiro, is just as fascinating.
Preparazzi x Eastern Craft Beer
You know us – no festival is ever complete without food. You’ll be glad to hear that one of your preferred cafes, Maison Ikkoku, will be dishing out all-day breakfast and cocktails (in the evening, of course). We think Preparazzi x Eastern Craft Beer – homely bakery by day, and Laksa Bar by night – is also an innovative culinary experience worth your time. Fans of popular food truck, The Travelling Cow, will be pleased. They will be setting up a ramen burger stall – yep, you saw that right – which honestly, we can’t wait to try!
So come celebrate the spirit of independent craft, and the need for experimentation and collaboration at the various events, exhibitions, workshops and parties at The U Factory at Gillman Barracks from Nov 2013 to Jan 2014.
