Ready, set, delve into the cultural side of Japan at the Asian Civilisations Museum.
International travel is slowly re-emerging, but why not say konnichiwa to the land of the rising sun right here, right now? Stoke your wanderlust at the “Life in Edo | Russel Wong in Kyoto” exhibition, which takes centre stage at the Asian Civilisations Museum from now until 17 October 2021.
Yes, that means you only have less than a month to catch the exhibition before it’s gone – snag your tickets with Klook (psst, tickets are going at up to 50% off!) before it’s too late. The exhibition enchants with the story of two popular cities in Japan – Edo (also known as Tokyo today), as well as Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital. Created in collaboration with Russel Wong and Kobe Shimbun, the exhibition shines the spotlight on the cultural side of Japan. Read on for what to expect!
Life in Edo
Feast your eyes on over 70 vibrant ukiyo-e prints showcasing life during the Edo period, some of which are masterpieces by the great masters of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Kitagawa Utamaro.
Russel Wong in Kyoto
Be transported to Kyoto, where the vanishing traditions of the geisha are illustrated through a series of photographs. Believe it or not, these photographs were taken over an extensive 13-year period!
The geishas’ practices and customs are depicted in 40 photographs, such as the training process, as well as the revered tea ceremony.
Seize the chance to see how past and present Japan melt into each other, and how their traditions transcend all lengths of time. That’s not all: head to the interactive space at the Level 2 Foyer to try your hand at photo-editing, make your own woodblock print, or hang a wish on the wall. Prefer a more guided experience? Arm yourself with the exhibition trail booklet.
