Welcome to Maduro, a listening lounge and bar devoted to preserving the virtuosity of the classics. Fashioned after owner Mr. P’s storied musical past and present, #SaturdaysBest is a weekly Saturday residency that nods to Mr. P’s insistence to always put on his finest, crisp tux on the stage, as one would wear to church on Sundays. Here, a monthly artiste-in-residence is appointed to perform and curate the line-up every Saturday of the month, adding his or her own spin to the Maduro magic.
For our Saturday’s Best this November we’ve literally recruited one of the local jazz scene’s most badass tenor saxophonist, Nicole Duffell, who also ran the now defunct underground jazz club B28, a wildly successful vanguard of state-of-the-art, straight-ahead jazz in its days.
You heard us right, we recruited her. So ladies and gentlemen, jazz cats and lions, in another classic case of “Mr. P’s done it again”, we present to you Nicole Duffell – your Saturday’s Best artiste in November, and Maduro’s new General Manager.
Helming most Saturdays in November, and the floor every other day of the week, get treated to Nicole’s rich tenor sound, emotional depth and inventive use of melodies, as well as her personable hospitality. Joining her is her trusty quartette of some of Singapore’s finest—Christy Smith on double bass, Aaron James Lee on drums and Joshua Wan on the baby grand—whom together will pay homage to a legendary tenor saxophonist each week. Each named and fashioned after an iconic album of tenor saxophonist legends who inspire Nicole’s own musical exploraitons, get acquainted with The Dexter Gordon Society’s striking lush tone and penchant for hard-swinging tunes, or John Coltrane’s versatility that has him swinging out loud, strong, cutting edge solos one minute and relaxing into a tender ballad the next, or Hank Mobley – Blue Note Records’ ability to effortlessly pull off that round, middleweight sound.
On the 23rd, expect a Nic and Nick double billing with Nicole Duffell and New York City’s Nick Hempton on sax duties, with a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure. Students who wish to get up to speed with one of modern day’s greatest tenor saxophonist can attend a special afternoon masterclass presented by Hempton himself. More on that in a hot minute. An extra night will be unlocked in December, simply because we can. Mark yourself as attending to get first-hand updates.
Admission is $35 per person (inclusive of one house pour spirit/wine). Maduro is located at 40C Harding Road, Level 3, Singapore 249548 (above ATOUT Restaurant) and open from 4pm to 2am every Saturday. For table reservations, please email [email protected] or call +65 9756 4775.
