As part of intercultural music exchange Roots & Routes 2024, Pasat Merdu is proud to present two FREE concerts at Singapore Polytechnic led by multicultural band The Straits Ensemble. Featuring folk songs from our community, as well as original tunes by The Straits Ensemble, audiences can look forward to tunes like Zapin Bunga Hutan, Joget Hitam Manis, 天乌乌, 紫竹调 and many more.
Roots & Routes 2024
Roots and Routes is a four-day intercultural music exchange for youth and individuals interested in cultural music. Attendees will participate in workshops to explore various cultural music styles and their popular pieces. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to collaborate and showcase their talents in an intercultural ensemble context. The event will culminate in a concert on June 21st, marking the conclusion of this enriching music exchange experience.
The Straits Ensemble
With an instrumentation that embodies’ Singapore’s cultural sound, The Straits Ensemble navigates the rich tapestry of Singapore’s heritage and taps on a global kampung spirit to celebrate diversity. Playing a repertoire of original compositions, reimagined folk tunes and more, the ensemble’s range of expression run from tender nuances to high energy, driving rhythms. Led by composer Felix Phang, the band took the stage with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 National Day Concert playing Felix’s commissioned composition, and was recently invited to perform at the Istana.
