UK’s Om Unit headlines this wicked party jointly organised by Syndicate, The Operatives and Revision Music
You can find all sorts of niche, underground music in Singapore if y’know where to look – reggae, techno, UK garage, you name it. And if you’re a junglist at heart who loves your cranked-up BPMs and turbulent beats, you’ll even find a bubbling and boisterous drum & bass scene here too.
While it normally hosts hypebeast-approved hip-hop nights within its retro-themed premises, Cherry Discotheque Singapore will be transformed into a hall of jungle, Chicago footwork, post-dubstep and other bass-focused goodies for one night only on 19 January. Organised by three local collectives, Syndicate, The Operatives and Revision Music, this left-field party promises a wicked ensemble of homegrown acts – DJs Kiat, Darren Dubwise, Senja and Rah, emcee Yom-G and VJ SSYSTM – topped off with one heck of a headliner.
Returning to our shores is UK’s bass champ, Om Unit, who last played an ace set here in 2013. A revered trend-setter, Jim Coles AKA Om Unit pushes out a malleable yet manic sound that’s been endorsed by icons like Goldie and µ-Ziq. His sets pound with hypnotic rhythms while straying from conventional four-to-the-floor formulae, often rife with quivering basslines, sporadic synth stabs, dubby vocals, ambient build-ups and nebulous, rolling breakdowns. It’s an urban-savvy sound that fits right in the heart of our concrete jungle – pun intended – and a perfect way to usher in the weekend because #TGIT.
Syndicate x The Operatives x Revision Music Present Om Unit, 19 January, 9pm-2am, Cherry Discotheque Singapore, #B1-01, 21 Mount Elizabeth, Singapore 228516. $20 for entry (incl. one drink).
