1. Watch our homegrown talents take the stage
World-famous acts aside, we’re shining a spotlight on our homegrown talents. On 5 and 6 January, two of Singapore’s finest young musicians – violinist Chloe Chua and organist Isaac Lee – will jointly take the stage for a soulful recital. Immerse in a treasure trove of musical gems, with ornate and powerful tunes like Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata and Nathan Milstein’s Paganiniana.
Fans of the SSO will wanna mark your calendars for their upcoming performances. On 25 February, indulge in musical bliss at Sunday Afternoon Fancies. From the divine harmonies of Tavener to whimsical gems of Rutter, SSO musicians and the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir will present a line-up of English choral and string delights.
The melodious enchantment continues with a 200th birth anniversary celebration of Smetana, the father of Czech music. Come 14 March, SSO musicians will pay homage to Smetana, Mozart and Barber through captivating string quartet performances. Up next on 17 May, catch these musicians performing Smetana’s and Dvořák’s best works, including Piano Trio in G minor and the bass-augmented String Quintet No. 2.
2. Marvel at internationally-renowned acts
Get ready for stunning showcases as globally-acclaimed acts hit our shores. On 3 and 4 February, witness Mozart’s celebrated comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro, come to life in miniature fashion. Led by guest violinist and First Concertmaster of Zurich Opera House, Wang Xiaoming, don’t miss the 90-minute, pocket-sized version of this masterpiece.
On 19 May, Czech string quartet The Pavel Haas Quartet – winner of six Gramophone Awards – will take centre stage with performances from Smetana, Suk and Janáček. Come 22 May, French harpist Xavier de Maistre will be gracing the hall with a breathtaking solo recital. Catch this virtuoso display, featuring Giovanni Battista Pescetti’s Sonata in C minor, and Franciso Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra.
3. Catch the iconic VCH Klais Organ in action
Marvel at the beauty of Victoria Concert Hall’s fully-mechanical organ crafted by German organ-builder Orgelbau Klais. Save the date for 23 March, when UK organist Richard Brasier showcases his finesse and versatility of the instrument at Creation Dance. Expect familiar names like Bach, Franck and Mozart, alongside titles by contemporary composers during the hour-long recital.
On 15 June, experience superb storytelling and captivating dances at The Crow and the Dove – narrated by Singapore’s organ scene doyen, Margaret Chen. With a fusion of ballet and Filipino folk dance, accompanied by the iconic VCH Klais organ, it’ll be an enchanting tale of fidelity.
From awe-inspiring homegrown acts to world-class performances, the VCHpresents series by SSO is sure to lift spirits, and delight both the young and young at heart. The best part?
