Featuring 2 craftsmen from Shigaraki-cho region of Japan, the kiln is one of the 6 ancient kilns in Japan.
Haruyuki Matsumoto, born in Tottori Prefecture, spins his magic on porcelain ware, constantly pushing the boundaries of one of most traditional crafts in the world. The unpredictability and insecurity of trimming each porcelain piece to its thinnest potential, almost glasslike, allowing light and shadow to permeate through its translucent surface drives the artist to discover unchartered methods and ways of presenting porcelain in new light. His recent new works include the use of iron and ash, resulting in ethereal-like texture and colours.
Gaku Nakane, born in Shiga Prefecture, was an apprentice for one of the ceramic living legend in Tamba Sasayama Pottery Village, another ancient kilns of Japan. His Shigaraki white clay “Crack” Series have been well received in Singapore at Hvala Cafe since we launched late last year. This time we are featuring new tableware design from his latest works.
