Gluten-free grub? Yes please. The Butcher’s Wife replaces Open Door Policy with a modern European menu and natural wines.
If you’re living the gluten-free lifestyle in Singapore, you’re no doubt thrilled that the scene is picking up the momentum. The latest restaurant where you can actually indulge? The Butcher’s Wife, which is all about delicious European comfort food in a lovely setting.
Taking over Open Door Policy’s quaint spot in the hip heritage neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru, the decor at this cosy 58-seater restaurant is about simple charm – a good mix of woods complemented with soft pastel hues – perfect for a romantic date night or chill sesh with your buddies. We particularly liked the table setting decor of adorable miniature bonsai trees that are available for sale.
Consultant chef Diego Jacquet and head chef Diego Carlos Quispe are at the helm here, and this Diego duo has recaptured the spirit of European neighbourhood bistros. It’s a feel-good addition to Yeong Siak Street, we say.
Well-balanced with elements of surprise, these artfully plated comfort foods are packed with robust flavours. Highlights include the kale and gorgonzola buñuelos served with saffron aioli and chestnuts pappardelle accompanied with huge chunks of braised osso buco ragu. If you think gluten-free bread is less than stellar, you’ll have your faith restored by the fluffy and flavourful baked focaccia topped with onions, tomatoes and thyme.
Catering to wine lovers, The Butcher’s Wife even carries over 37 labels, including a selection of natural wines sourced globally to perfectly complement every meal at the restaurant. Have as many glasses as you can as your favourite bottle might not be available the next time you visit.
To be honest, I was surprised that all the dishes at The Butcher’s Wife were entirely gluten-free. Full disclosure: I have no issues with gluten and I couldn’t even tell the difference! Hop on over to The Butcher’s Wife the next time you have a gluten intolerant or coeliac friend in the group. But frankly, you don’t need that reason: this is fantastic modern-European comfort food everyone is gonna love.
