The NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto capsules promise quality Joe without the fuss of a coffee run. Sounds too good to be true? Read on for our verdict!
Like most coffee drinkers I know, my relationship with caffeine is one of necessity: Monday mornings, dreary mid-day slumps and ill-conceived hangovers are perfect excuses for tossing back a shot or two from one of the many cafes surrounding the Honeycombers’ HQ in Telok Ayer. While I may not be a real coffee aficionado, I’m still pretty particular about the taste and aroma of the brew – I’d only fall back on instant coffee and the toe-curling stuff from kopitiams if I was in serious need of a caffeine (or adrenaline) boost.
Switching from pricey cafe cuppas to the more affordable coffee capsules had never crossed my mind, but that all changed when the team received the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Eclipse coffee machine, complete with a generous supply of capsules comprising well-loved classics and the brand new Catuai range. Were we excited? Hell, you bet we were!

What is it
The Eclipse coffee machine has an otherworldly appearance – its sleek donut shape features an innovative mechanism that opens at the push of a button. The machine’s touch controls lets you customise the amount of water recommended for each capsule, and its 15-bar pressure system produces quality coffee with a thick and velvety crema. Want a conversation starter? You’ve got one.
What we tried (and loved!)
The fun kicked off on a caffeinated high when the team scrambled to pick their favourite blends. Topping the list of those who prefer stronger brews is the Catuai Do Brasil, an Arabica bean varietal that has a robust flavour with soothing floral notes, and a surprisingly mild roast. If you love the full-bodied aroma of an espresso sans the lingering tartness, this is the one for you.
Making the switch from cafe au lait to an espresso? Ease into a stronger shot with the Cortado – this popular Spanish concoction balances the acidity of an espresso with an equal portion of steamed milk. The result is a velvety beverage that precedes the crowd-pleasing flat white. Another winner in our books, the (surprise, surprise) Chococino is an indulgent chocolate drink that will appeal to those looking for a decaf option.
Our verdict
For a cafe-standard (read: potent) shot, the Catuai Do Brasil is, hands down, our top choice. These limited edition capsules are priced at $11.90 for a box of 16; a real steal especially if you already own a capsule coffee machine.
