From sales in record stores to events featuring live bands and DJs, these hip happenings will spin you right round like a record
If the thought of crate-digging for hours in record stores and spending hundreds on vinyls that no one’s heard of thrills you, then you’ve probably been waiting for this day all year. Record Store Day is right around the corner on 22 April, and the local music scene is buzzing with all sorts of events to mark the occasion. Here are some of my picks.
A rare vinyl showcase at two of the best record stores in town
Naturally, you’re bound to unearth some treasures from the record vault on this special day. Two of Singapore’s most respected record stores, Vinylicious Records and The Analog Vault, will be bringing down a collection of Record Store Day special releases, and they’ll all be for sale. Vinyl collectors, ready for some retail therapy?
Vinylicious, #03-01 Peninsula Shopping Centre, 3 Coleman Street, Singapore 179804.
The Analog Vault,#02-13 Esplanade Mall, 8 Raffles Avenue, Singapore 039802, Open Mon-Sun 1pm-9pm.
A vinyl-only party that focuses on fashion
Consistently throwing parties with a conscience – this series once had a pop-up rooftop fiesta above The Projector that touched on the issue of global warming – Kampong returns in April at Red Baron in Gillman Barracks, and it’s swerving its focus towards fashion. This vinyl-only jamboree, helmed by seven DJs all day (including Jeck Hyde, Vito, and Kentaro), ties in with Fashion Revolution Week this time ’round, addressing the topic of sustainable fashion and transparency in the industry.
Only Vinyl – The Fashion Revolution by Kampong, 22 April, Red Baron, Gillman Barracks, Blk 45 Malan Road, Singapore 109455. Free entry.
A Geylang gig at The Barbershop Music
Like that vintage beaut you’ll find while crate-digging, this gig is a rare find, tucked within a whimsical vinyl store that shares its space with a barbershop… in Geylang. Local bands will be running the show here, including synth-poppers Riot !n Magenta, indie-rockers Windtree, and the dangdut (Indonesian folk) sounds of Geylang Afro Rock Band.
Record Store Day 2017, 21 April, The Barbershop Music, 311A Geylang Road, Singapore 389350. More information here.
A pop-up boogie at Circular Road
Do you know where Molly Malone’s is on Circular Road? Good. Head upstairs above the Irish pub, and you’ll find this underground party that’s commemorating Record Store Day with a fiesta of reggae, disco, house and other bumpy boogies. This shindig features guest DJs Lady Emma, and back-to-back sets between Andrew McKay and Tommy Rocksteady, MyHero and Disko Kosmik, Rocky Suave and Tiel, and more.
Gimme Shelter presents Record Store Day, Level 3 The Hideaway Singapore, 56 Circular Road, Singapore 049411. Entry is $10 at the door.
Looking for more music events to let loose? These clubs in Singapore should do the trick, as will these best venues for live music.
