Because it’s bloody good, that’s why. The St. Regis’ signature cocktail, originally known as the Red Snapper as Bloody Mary was deemed too racy a name, is also celebrating its 80th anniversary this month, so it’s excellent time for you to be head over heels for the classic concoction.
First, Know Your Drink
Its origins are somewhat fuzzy – as with most heritage cocktails – but Fernand Petiot’s first Bloody Mary, made within the swanky confines of The St. Regis New York’s King Cole Bar, nevertheless made history. His simple but sophisticated recipe consists of premium vodka, house-made Bloody Mary mix that includes tomato juice, Tobasco sauce, lots of pepper, and ground celery salt, and a lemon wedge for garnishing.

Local Renditions
The Bloody Mary remains a St. Regis signature, and each hotel under the brand crafts its own interpretation of the signature libation. At St. Regis Osaka, there’s the Shogun Mary, which has spicy wasabi, fresh yuzu fruit and dry gin, while the Chilli Padi Mary at Astor Bar – infused with lemongrass, chilli padi, and ginger to give the cocktail a distinctive Singaporean flavour.
In Indonesia, we have the Bali Mary – from The St. Regis Bali Resort’s King Cole Bar – which contains jicama, cucumber, and brown sugar. The best time to have it is at The St. Regis Bloody Mary Afternoon Tea, happening every Sunday in the month of October.
If you’re keen to try making one at home, round up 100g of chopped jicama (more for garnish), fresh cucumber (6 cubes), brown sugar (1 cube), premium pepper vodka (45ml), Bloody Mary mix (210ml, see recipe), celery salt, celery stalk, and cherry tomato for garnishing. Muddle the jicama, cucumber and brown sugar. Mix with pepper vodka and Bloody Mary mix. Shake and pour into a 280 ml Champagne glass rimmed with celery salt, then serve chilled (not on ice). Garnish with V-shape of jicama, celery and cherry tomato. Easy-peasy!
