Founder and Creative Director of Bulibasha Sustainable Footwear

The future of fashion is evolving towards more sustainable, inclusive, and community-based brands. We are witnessing a shift where consumers increasingly prioritise ethical and environmentally conscious choices.
Tell us your story – how did you get here?
After graduating from the Faculty of Applied Arts in the Textile Department in Belgrade, Serbia in 2013, I received a one-year scholarship at the University of the Arts in Yogyakarta. After completion, the next destination on my journey was Bali, which completely captivated me with its diversity and warmth.
This wonderful destination has not only become the place where I live, but also a key element that has shaped my artistic expression and personal growth. Bali has become an inspiration that daily encourages me to explore, create, and deeply connect with the world around me.
My interest in natural materials and using them to creating artistic objects had previously led me to a deep exploration of various possibilities. Through that research, I gained knowledge of the richness of Indonesia’s natural resources and the skilful ways in which palm leaves are used in weaving and shaping.
The decisive moment for Bulibasha occurred when I decided to find a blend of beauty and utility. As I passed by a craft shop, I noticed craftsmen working on embroidery for shoes. That was the trigger that set off a cascade of ideas. Gradually, my concept for Bulibasha began to take shape. Everything I wanted to express, what best described me as a creative person, fit into the concept of Bulibasha shoes. The delicate natural materials, the world of fashion, creativity, craftsmanship, authentic Balinese culture and its spirit, as well as a strong focus on sustainable production – it all came together.
Over time, that vision became clearer and more appealing. I felt myself gradually falling in love with every aspect of the entire concept. The result is Bulibasha footwear that is not just a product, but something that carries within it a deep story, carefully shaped from a vision that has become a reality.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Bulibasha Footwear emerged during the challenging times of the pandemic, a period marked by the departure of many from Bali, leaving the island in a state of emptiness. Fuelled by unwavering determination, I invested my passion into creating Bulibasha’s first samples. At a time when numerous businesses were forced to close, and unemployment surged, my objective was to offer stability to as many individuals as possible.
The first Bulibasha creations were crafted by my own hands, and soon after, I sought to engage the Balinese community, specifically targeting the older, less fortunate, and less educated individuals, including mothers with children. This led to the establishment of a training program, providing valuable skills and employment opportunities within the local communities.
In just a few months, Bulibasha transitioned from a home office concept to leasing our first dedicated workshop and offices. Presently, we operate three productions and have expanded our team of now highly skilled artisans.
Our journey is marked by significant milestones, including the honour of being featured in British Vogue Magazine and undertaking a substantial order for Marvel’s studios. These accomplishments underscore the success of Bulibasha Footwear, showcasing not only resilience in adversity, but also the ability to thrive and make a lasting impact in the world of artisanal craftsmanship.
I take great pride in another accomplishment — the new work principle we’ve implemented in the company, emphasising a task-driven approach rather than being bound by time. I aimed to ensure flexibility, allowing everyone the freedom to prioritise their family needs first. Recognising the significance of this approach for the Balinese community, I endeavour to create a work environment where individuals are not constrained by time pressures and the associated rules, providing a space conducive to productivity and well-being.
We have now proudly positioned ourselves as one of the foremost footwear brands specialising in natural materials in Indonesia, a feat we believe no one else has achieved before. Acknowledging the relatively limited strength of the footwear industry in this region, we are optimistic about our journey towards establishing ourselves as one of the foremost brands in this category.
What impact have you made in Bali?
In Bali, our impact extends beyond the realm of business. Our signature footwear is entirely handmade, designed using natural materials, plant-based dyes, and vegetable-tanned leather. All-natural leaf fibres are handwoven using techniques exclusive to Bulibasha.
We believe that Bulibasha serves as an impactful role model for those seeking to minimise waste in Bali and contribute by embracing the use of more sustainable materials.
Creating a work environment that prioritises and supports family values, employees are task driven while self-managed. Our team nominates their own schedules around tending to family needs and community priorities. Through freedom, trust, and creative guidance, we build lasting relationships with incredible results in productivity and staff morale. Bulibasha hopes that this model of employment will be recognised and implemented more frequently within the global community.
Moreover, our focus on engaging the Balinese community, especially the less fortunate and less educated, has resulted in a training program that empowers individuals to become skilled artisans. By providing jobs within the local community, we aim to contribute to the economic well-being of Bali.
Our efforts have not only elevated Bulibasha Footwear to a prominent position in the industry, but have also made a tangible and positive impact on the lives of individuals in our community and their personal growth. Everybody deserves access to new skills, employment, and fair trade, and while educating the youth is essential, embracing elders with fresh work opportunities is imperative to sustainable communities.
We believe every individual can be a master of something if given the right support, coaching, and passage to information.
What does the future look like for you?
Bulibasha’s future would be envisioning global recognition and influence that extends beyond its existing business boundaries. Despite already making a mark in over 30+ destinations worldwide, the goal is to actively pursue additional opportunities for expansion and a broader positive impact.
One primary focus for Bulibasha is to transform into a globally recognised brand, serving as a platform for individuals to acquire high-quality, handcrafted footwear made from a wide range of natural materials. Our aim is to extend this presence globally, emphasising not just the style and quality of our footwear but also the deep-rooted values that define our brand.
Looking ahead, we aspire for Bulibasha’s influence to also extend beyond the confines of the fashion industry. Realising these goals involves being perceived as a voice for change and positive contribution, not only within the realm of fashion but also in championing sustainability, supporting local communities, and fostering a deeper connection with nature.
The ultimate measure of success would be the establishment of a legacy where the Bulibasha serves as an inspiration for individuals to lead improved, more sustainable lives.
Presently, our primary focus involves team expansion and the continuous development of our styles, incorporating an even broader range of natural materials. We are actively implementing plans for the development of vegan biodegradable leather and introducing other captivating editions to enhance our brand. We have exciting plans to unveil more distinctive collections, engaging in collaborations with diverse artisanal talents from various regions of Indonesia.
In addition to our creative pursuits, we aspire to provide additional educational support for the children of our artisans. We aim to create a nurturing space where the children can be present, just as some of them currently are. We welcome and look after them within our community while their mothers are working. Furthermore, we envision establishing a more active program to broaden their knowledge in fields that are most beneficial to them.
Our overarching goal is to extend our production footprint beyond Bali, reaching other islands, with the ultimate aspiration of achieving a global presence.
What do you love most about Bali?
What I appreciate most about Bali is its resilient spirit and the sense of community that prevails, even in challenging times. The island’s beauty and cultural richness provide an inspiring backdrop for my work.
Moreover, Bali’s diverse and vibrant communities have been instrumental in shaping my vision, from the skilled artisans who contribute to our unique designs, to the welcoming atmosphere that fosters creativity. The commitment to sustainability and a holistic approach aligns seamlessly with the ethos I am implementing in Bulibasha, making Bali not only my base but a source of inspiration for further journeys.
I thoroughly enjoy the unique blend of tradition and modernity in Bali — a place where I can effortlessly connect with like-minded individuals while also finding serene corners for personal reflection and self-improvement. I am forever grateful for the acceptance and the sense of belonging I’ve found with my local family in Bali. It brings me immense joy to give back to Bali and its community in gratitude for the acceptance and kindness I’ve received. I am committed to ensuring that my work leaves a beautiful mark and inspires many on their creative journeys, empowering them to contribute to this island just as we strive to do.
In your opinion, what does the future of fashion look like?
In my opinion, the future of fashion is evolving towards more sustainable, inclusive, and community-based brands. We are witnessing a shift where consumers increasingly prioritise ethical and environmentally conscious choices. But not as fast as we wish…
Overall, the future of fashion should be about making thoughtful choices that go beyond aesthetics, considering the impact on the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting a more holistic and mindful approach to fashion. However, I don’t believe this transition will be easy and smooth. We are constantly challenged by fast fashion and consumerism. Nevertheless, I would like to believe that society is becoming more aware of the global issues we currently face and will take action to make more conscious choices.
