Escape, disconnect or experience a romantic reconnection at this luxury island getaway in Lombok.
Sometimes in our excitement to tell you about all things Bali, we forget to mention Bali’s beautiful island neighbour, Lombok. Just a hop, skip, jump or half-hour plane ride away is the place to experience it: The Oberoi Lombok, sister property to one of our favourites, The Oberoi Seminyak.
Situated amongst 24 acres of aged coconut and frangipani trees and beautiful bougainvillea flowers, the extensive grounds hug the west-facing shoreline in Medana Bay, with the Gili islands perched between you and the setting sun. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation, as The Oberoi boasts 20 Luxury Villas (12 with a private swimming pool) and 30 Luxury Pavilions to rest your head in. You also get to pick between garden or ocean views.
To disconnect from today’s busy life, turn off your devices and melt into the serene surrounds. The Oberoi has plenty to keep you busy as your busy mind unwinds. Spend your days playing croquet on the lawn, sun baking by the beach, joining in a tennis match, lunching by the pool, watching the sun set with a cocktail in hand, before ending the day with fine dining under the stars. If pampering is what you need to get into the relaxed vibe, the property features a full service spa offering a range of natural and holistic treatments that will put your mind and body at ease.
Not that you’ll want to leave the property….but if you’d like to experience the natural beauty of the island and its people, a snorkelling excursion off the Gili’s and a cidomo ride [traditional horse and cart] to the local market is a must.
All aboard for a 9am departure to the renowned Gili Islands! Snorkel, mask and flippers in hand, you are in for some serious Nemo and Dory spotting. There is also the high chance a turtle will join you, so keep your goggles clear in anticipation. After feasting your eyes on this magical underwater world, the smiling crew will drop anchor on the shores of Gili Air, where you can take the opportunity to recharge your batteries with a seafood lunch and explore the island by foot. Alternatively, rent a bike and circumnavigate the island before heading back to your Lombok home underneath the stunning contours of Mount Rinjani.
Introducing Marco Polo, the horse power behind the local village market tour. Board your cidomo and be whisked away along the country roads for a visit to the traditional market – the central meeting point for local village life where you’ll find an assortment of fresh produce, spices, local cooking utensils, and clothes. You will be walked through the market as your guide highlights all the new sights and smells that are part of Lombok cuisine and custom.
Once you’re back at The Oberoi, Sasak Afternoon Tea is served with a selection of fine teas, kopi and traditional sasak sweets. The afternoon tea is a nice wind down from the day’s activities and a chance to learn a little bit more about Sasak culture, including their traditional arts and crafts.
Come sun down, The Oberoi’s Tokek Bar offers the perfect tranquil locale to sit back, relax, and have a delicious cocktail while the sunset works its magic. Prepare to be captivated as the stunning sunset creates mirror images in front of your eyes – don’t worry, it’s the signature infinity pools (not the cocktails) that will have you seeing double!
It’s not often that you are five star dined for all three meals of the day, but yes, this exists, right here on the pool’s doorstep. Their two restaurants, Sunbird for breakfast and lunch, and The Lumbung for dinner, features a rotating menu so you get to try something amazing and different each day. The menu caters to all tastes and requirements, whilst also drawing on international and regional flavours including the Oberoi’s birthplace, India. The curries will get your mouth watering in anticipation – our recommendations are the Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken Curry) and Bhuna Gosht (Lamb Shank Curry).
The jewel in the crown that is The Oberoi, Lombok are the staff. Each member takes the time to really get to know their guests, anticipating any of your needs and executing them seamlessly. The resident Beach Butler, Sayu (the man behind your sun lounge dreams), ensures that you have everything you need to relax and even that your sunglass lenses are clean throughout the day (for real). His character and charisma are a true testament to The Oberoi, like all its staff. All these little gestures contribute to the warm family vibe that has kept many staff there for decades and guests coming back time after time.
