Enjoy a delightful Balinese Megibung Feast by renowned chef Heinz Von Holzen from Art Cafe Bumbu Bali and Chef Penelope Williams from Bali Asli Karangasem.
The Balinese word Megibung describes far more than the act of sharing a meal. It is a cherished tradition of eating together from a single communal platter, where family members, friends, neighbours, and guests sit in a circle and enjoy food as equals. In Balinese culture, Megibung symbolises unity, harmony, respect, and togetherness. It reminds us that food is not only nourishment for the body but also a way to strengthen relationships and build community.
The tradition is believed to have originated in East Bali during the reign of the Kingdom of Karangasem in the late seventeenth century. According to local history, King I Gusti Anglurah Ketut Karangasem introduced Megibung while leading military campaigns, encouraging his soldiers to share meals from one large serving as a way of fostering equality, discipline, and solidarity. Over time, the custom spread throughout Bali and became an important part of village life.
For the Balinese, Megibung is ultimately a celebration of life itself—where food, family, friendship, and gratitude come together around one shared.
