From sharing services to taxi locators, we've rounded up five of the best taxi apps in Singapore that will make your life a wee bit easier
In a city of nearly 30,000 taxis, you’d think getting one would be a breeze – or at least not quite as painful as a trip to the dentist. Yeah, right. To help ease some of your common taxi woes (Long queues! Lost cabbies! Exorbitant fares!), we have rounded up five of the best taxi apps that will, in one way or another, make your life a wee bit easier. Click to download.
Previously known as GrabTaxi, Grab has enhanced its app to cater to a wider range of consumers. With over 100,000 drivers across its brand-new platforms such as JustGrab, GrabTaxi and GrabHitch, it’s almost effortless to book a ride. The extension in its line of services – offering drivers in private cars, on top of their previous standard cabs, provides a more personalised and sleek mode of transport for commuters. It’s newest feature, GrabFamily, allows safe travelling for children aged four to seven years old, providing seat boosters to better adjust seat belts according to the height of your young ones. This app also shows you the estimated rates beforehand to avoid getting blindsided by inflated fares! And for all you thrifties, choose GrabShare for a significant reduction in costs when you share your trip with another rider. Expect a little detour and a tad longer journey, though!
PSST: And, for the month of JUNE 2017 the lovely peeps at GrabFamily are offering Honeycombers readers $2 off x 3 GrabFamily rides with promo code: SAFERIDE. www.grab.com/sg
If there’s only space for one taxi app in your phone, this might be it. ComfortDelGro’s phone booking service – by the way, the company is the largest taxi operator in Singapore – is typically reliable, even during rush hour or rainy days, though little hiccups (like failed bookings) are to be expected. It’s easy to use: you can bookmark up to 20 pick-up addresses and keep an eye on your driver’s route with a handy location-tracking function.
More comfortable with metered fares and your regular flag-down cabs? This app shows you the number of taxis within your vicinity – that means no more sweating under the scorching hot sun, flailing your arm hopelessly by the side of the road, waiting for no one to cruise by. You can choose to walk to a taxi ‘hotspot’ instead! What’s more, say goodbye to booking charges.
Like Grab, Uber has since upgraded its services to UberPool (comparable to GrabShare), UberExec (if you wanna ride in a swanky Mercedes or BMW), UberXL (for up to six passengers) and more. App-wise, it’s definitely the most user-friendly in the market with a clean interface and a one-touch booking function. Sharing a cab back home with your mates? They’ve got you! Simply select the ‘split-the-bill’ option as a payment method before or during the ride and voila! No more fussing over who’s gonna take the bill.
Booking cabs through this app will save you the hassle of having to phone a taxi company. Working with multiple cab companies in Singapore, your taxi woes will all be solved (booking charges still apply, though!) with the large fleet available to you. Got a little time to spare? There is also a free ‘checking-in’ feature to notify drivers nearby that you’re in need of a car. If you’re lucky, a cab will swing by and pick you up – this nifty function has no additional booking fees!
