If suckling pig, peking duck, crab and dim sum make your mouth water, this new place is just for you (and your tastebuds)
Hands up if you love Chinese food! For all of you with hands firmly in the air, we’ve got some stellar news for you; Avenue Joffre is opening its first branch in Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa. Pining for peking duck? Craving a crab fix? Salivating at the thought of suckling pig? Okay we’ll stop, but you get the idea! If you are in need of an Asian food fest, why not head on over to Sentosa Island and check out the latest Chinese restaurant on the block.
Though the restaurant is new, the story behind it is steeped in nostalgic history, and it goes a little something like this… Once upon a time (the 1930s to be precise), Avenue Joffre (now known as Huaihai Road) in Shanghai’s French Concession, was the place to see and be seen for members of the glitterati and high society. A savvy Cantonese filmmaker who owned a house on the avenue opened it up for gatherings, social activities, and foodie get-togethers. Quickly becoming renowned for Shanghainese cuisine whipped up by his chef, alongside the Cantonese food he created, word on the street soon spread and it became a place where locals would exchange ideas and share cuisines from all over China.
Fast forward a century, and the restaurant, Avenue Joffre, sticks true to the idea of serving multiple Chinese cuisines under one roof. Thanks to the not one, but four(!) master chefs in residence, you can feast on the likes of Szechuan, Cantonese, or Jiangzu cuisine, plus a whole lot more. Guest chefs will also visit to highlight new Chinese regions, so chances are you’ll never get bored of the menu. Though with drool-worthy dishes such as Hong Kong style roasted suckling pig, stir-fried crab with glutinous rice, and Szechuan poached sliced fish in chilli oil, there’s probably not much chance of that anyway.
Keeping the tale and tradition going, the interior of Avenue Joffre also channels the vibes of the original filmmaker’s house. If vintage is your thing, you’ll be in old-school heaven among the 1930s and ’40s photographs and memorabilia. An epic feast and a trip down memory lane? We love the sound of this unique dining concept already!
