News you can digest in 5
This week’s news in a nutshell:
- Following in the footsteps of J. Lo, Beyoncé, and Leo DiCaprio, Lupita Nyong’o (who won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave) tops PEOPLE magazine’s Most Beautiful 2014 list! Other celebs (we think deserved) making the list include Kerry Washington, Amber Heard, Pink, and ex-wrestler (and almost Mrs. Clooney) Stacy Keibler.
- The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore has come through: so if you have an existing contract with our telcos, you won’t be charged for using 4G services – for now.
- Have you seen Avril Lavigne’s new Hello Kitty music vid? Critics are pouncing – “racist”, “offensive”, “worse thing you’ll watch all week” are just a few of their choice phrases – so watch (at your own risk) and decide.
- And Singaporeans are still obsessed with Hello Kitty collectibles, especially if they’re hawked at McDonald’s. The server crashed shortly after the online sale began on Wednesday. We hear the black market’s already profiteering.
- Jodie Foster is married! The 51-year old thespian tied the knot with Alexandra Hedison (who used to date Ellen DeGeneres by the way) over the weekend to very little fanfare.
- You’ll know this even if you’re not a soccer fan ‘cause it’s flooding your Facebook feed: Manchester United has sacked David Moyes to widespread approval (their shares on the NYSE were up by more than 6%!). Ryan Giggs will be taking over till they find a new manager – we wonder how that’ll work out.
- Today we remember ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day – a dawn service was held at Kranji War Memorial Cemetery to commemorate the ANZA soldiers who fought at Gallipoli in 1915 during WWI. Lest we forget.
