You might want to put on your stretchy pants for this very special seafood feast at Baba Chews Bar & Eatery – one of our favourite restaurants in the East
Katong is known as the go-to neighbourhood for Peranakan culture, history, and of course, food. Now, the iconic precinct has upped its game with the launch of a selection of local and Peranakan-style seafood dishes at Baba Chews Eatery & Bar.
Located within Katong Square in the old Joo Chiat Police Station (which is now a conserved building), Baba Chews is a gorgeous all-day dining spot with a modern take on Peranakan fare, as well as other local favourites. With homely and vintage-inspired interiors, the eatery fits like a glove in the historical Katong and Joo Chiat area. If you’re craving seafood and want to treat yourself to something local, make a beeline for Baba Chews and book a spot to try their fab seafood specials that are available from now till 31 August 2018.
Chew on this
Wondering what’s on the menu? There are creations like Nonya-style baked lobster coated with sabayon sauce that’s been given a local twist courtesy of a special sambal mix, Rempah Red Sea prawns, which is stir-fried in a spicy coconut cream, and a curry assam red snapper fish head topped with an assortment of ingredients, from okra to onion and eggplant.
There’s also the snow crab Bakwan Kepiting – a traditional Peranakan soup made with Korean snow crab stock and meatballs featuring pork and crab meat – but if you need some meat to go with your seafood, order the aromatic and fork-tender beef short ribs rendang.
Be sure to leave room for the most important part of every meal: dessert. The Peranakan theme continues here, so expect treats like shaved ice doused in fresh coconut cream and gula melaka (better known as chendol), and kueh durian – Baba Chews’ take on the classic kueh dadar, only this one’s made with homemade durian mousse (in addition to the usual shredded coconut soaked with gula melaka) and comes topped with a scoop of – you guessed it – gula melaka ice cream.
Local delights
Aside from Peranakan-style bites, local dishes will also be on offer. Order the herbal drunken tiger prawns and the Soon Hock claypot laksa, which comes with a poached, fresh marble goby and Korean wheat noodles in a spicy-creamy laksa broth.
If you’re feeling really hungry, go for the Sri Lankan crab and have it your way – either with black pepper, salted egg yolk sauce, or chilli.
