Musical performances, cocktails, and an inflatable playground – there’s heaps more to look forward to at the i Light Marina Bay this year than just light installations
If we had to make a list of our favourite events in Singapore, there’s no doubt i Light Marina Bay would be right up there. The sustainable light art festival is back for its sixth edition, happening from 9 March to 1 April. Aside from its marvellous light art installations, there are more exciting reasons to head down this year.
Of course, there are the must-see lit works of art
Created by a mix of local and international artists from 14 countries, the 22 installations are designed with energy-saving lighting and recycled or eco-friendly materials. The message? Adopt sustainable habits in your everyday life. Don’t miss highlights like ‘Milk Bottle Cows’ – some 2,000 plastic milk bottles make up this exhibit by Singapore-based architect BP Loh, who aims to encourage festival-goers to upcycle and recycle whenever possible.
There are also gorgeous works by global talent such as British artist, Michael Davis – creator of the semi-acoustic, multi-player musical sculpture, ‘illumaphonium’ – as well as Polish artist Magdalena Radziszewska, the lady behind the stunning, fantasy-like installation, ‘Dreamscape’.
Then there’s a huge inflatable playground for kids and kidults…
Perfect for those with an obsession with bouncy castles and the like, Art-Zoo Inflatable Park (9 March to 1 April) is an experiential inflatable playground at The Float @ Marina Bay. Run, slide, jump, and wrestle your way through the different areas featuring adorable puffed-up creatures like otters, bears and even the mythical Yeti. Pro tip: You’re gonna be sweating a lot here no matter the time of the day so be sure to wear light clothes!
A cool pop-up concept offering even cooler experiences…
Lounge around at ILLUMI Bar, an LED-lit pop-up lifestyle space that’s making its debut at the festival. Fitted with “furniture” made from reusable plastic tanks, ILLUMI Bar has all sorts of fun stuff for you to try, including cocktail-and-food pairings and other boozy bespoke experiences. The place is free-to-enter for all and is great for gatherings with your squad when you attend i Light Marina Bay. Psst… from here you guys can even catch ‘Spectra’, Marina Bay Sands’ outdoor light and water show!
Plus a park full of trendy bites, fun games, and live music
Making a comeback this year is GastroBeats, an urban lifestyle park in a spanking new neon-themed space at The Promontory. Focusing on its pillars ‘Eat, Sing, Play, Repeat’, the buzzing hub will offer just about everything you can think of for the month of March, from delish street food and trippy LED neon installation walls to workshops and musical performances by local acts like Jack and Rai and Cadence.
And last but not least, a massive carnival for all ages
Everyone’s talking about the crazy rides and awesome games (and prizes!) at the Prudential Marina Bay Carnival. If you haven’t been, this is your chance to swing by since it’s part of i Light Marina Bay. Oh, it also ends 1 April 2018, so you better hurry.
And that’s just scratching the surface. There are other fringe events that might also be up your alley, like Silent Disco and the ILLUMI Fest Run, so head to the official website of i Light Marina Bay to find out exactly what’s in store for you!
i Light Marina Bay takes place from 9 March to 1 April 2018 and is open from 7:30pm to 11pm (closing time extended to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights). Admission is free, but charges may apply for some attractions.
