Not a fan of sweet treats? You might change your mind about these baked and snowskin mooncakes that come in a whole gamut of sweet and savoury flavours.
The Mid-Autumn Festival’s almost here, and with it comes a whole slew of family-friendly activities. Aside from indulging in the time-honoured tradition of moon-gazing, poetic meanderings and a ‘bout of lantern-toting fun, it’s also an excuse to expand your waistlines with an ever-so-sinful array of mooncakes.
If you’ve never really understood the appeal of these sweet treats, these whimsical dioramas from Fairmont Singapore may just renew your interest in the festival’s snack du jour. Inspired by a Lego-themed shoot for Anti:dote (the hotel’s award-winning cocktail bar), the campaign was conceptualised by the Fairmont team to showcase the launch of their miniature mooncakes. Besides the undeniably cute factor (and “cute” isn’t a term we use lightly here at the Honeycombers), new and popular flavours like the Golden Caramel Crunch and Imperial Yuzu should tantalise your tastebuds – if nothing else.
Got a sweet tooth? Then look no further
The crowd favourite at the table is—hands down—the Golden Caramel Crunch. This feuilletine chocolate mooncake combines the contrasting textures of crispy feuilletine flakes and creamy milk chocolate couverture, all encased in a fancy, Tiffany blue snowskin.
Add a shot of alcohol, and you can be sure that it’ll be our next favourite thing. The Rum & Raisin Chocolate Truffle is pretty self explanatory – but if you must know, it does come with a generous dose of liquor.
These newfangled snowskin mooncakes aren’t only for lovers of chocolate. The Imperial Yuzu is a fusion of crunchy chocolate pearls, creamy white chocolate and of course, yuzu. Is it any wonder that it’s one of the most sought-after flavours each year?
Traditionalists, this one’s for you
Nothing spells “back to basics” like baked mooncakes, and you can always fall back on the Double Yolk and White Lotus Paste. All you need is a warm cup of Chinese tea to go with this simple treat – we wouldn’t have it any other way! Injecting a savoury crunch to the usual lotus paste variety, the Five Grains in White Lotus Paste mooncake comes with a wholesome mix of walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, melon seeds and white sesame, a homage to the rustic grain farms of ancient China.
