Foodies and shopaholics, rejoice! Get ready to feast your eyes on an eclectic array of homegrown food items and handcrafted knick-knacks this August
When it comes to spending a chilled-out weekend with the squad, nothing quite beats the good ‘ol combination of eating and shopping at our favourite cafes and boutiques around the island. Enter Wheelock Place’s OYAY Nommunity weekend market, back for its third run on 12 and 13 August – the event brings with it a curated mix of stylish and practical fashion items, handmade curios and mouthwatering snacks from independent and international retailers, and live performances to boot. Excited already? We know we are!
Makers, galore
While we can’t wait to check out the exclusive merchandise that will be on display, it’s not just the mall’s shops who are setting up booths at the market. Injecting some vibrancy to the lineup are local vendors selling everything from handmade crafts and jewellery, to beauty products and food. Lemonlambsart (@lemonlambsart) designs inspirational and colourful cards, prints and colouring books, all fun gift ideas for your loved ones. If you’re looking for pretty and affordable accessories, then make a beeline for Lily+Bling and fill your wardrobes with its trendy, handmade necklaces and earrings. For those who want to reduce their carbon footprint, we recommend shopping at You Living for eco-friendly fashion and handmade clothes, bags and jewellery. Beauty buffs, there’s something for you too! Class Society is an independent perfumer that makes dry colognes that are alcohol-free, so bag their sophisticated scents now.
You can even do your part for charity while you shop: sales from every ceramic ware purchased from social enterprise Center Pottery will benefit special clay classes for mental health patients, the terminally-ill and the elderly.
Food, glorious, food
Putting the “nom” in “Nommunity” is a delicious spread of homegrown food and beverage stalls. Our picks include Boylan Bottling’s 100% cane sugar sodas from Craft Beverage Supply, made using quality, natural ingredients and bottled using a technique that’s over 120 years old. Impressed? Wait ‘til you hear more! Skip the run-of-the-mill supermarket variety for freshly baked handmade cookies by Spatula & Whisk, available in Asian-inspired flavours such as gula melaka-coconut and kopi chocolate, or round up your trip with spicy Thai street food from Bangkok Jam.
Deals and steals
Shopping rewards are a major highlight at every OYAY weekend market, and you’ll find plenty of reasons to splurge here. At Cumulus, purchase the Natsu and Haru series of leather wallets from Kisetsu at 50% off, or take home a sleek Hypergrand watch at a 30% discount. If you’re planning a trip to the great outdoors, make a stop at Outdoor Life to stock up on essentials – the store is offering a 20% off all summer wear and special discounts on selected items with every summer apparel purchase. What’s more, shoppers will receive a $5 voucher with a minimum spend of $40. Don’t forget to pop into Crumpler for its new range of stylish and practical bags, too. Over at Yacht 21, the boutique is retailing 100 “surprise” bags containing Yacht 21 apparel, a limited edition travel pouch and a bracelet that’s priced at $5 – and we’ve been told that each goodie bag is worth more than $70 (yes, you’ve heard that right!).
With deals this irresistible, be sure to pop by this weekend, or risk missing out!
OYAY Nommunity weekend market is happening from 12 to 13 August, from 11am – 9pm at Wheelock Place, Level 2. Admission is free.
