Looking for a new anti-aging skincare routine? Our beauty writer puts Chanel’s Blue Serum to the test.
Truth be told, even as a beauty writer, I’m often overwhelmed by the skincare industry thanks to the mind-boggling number of products available in the market. Take the vast anti-aging options available – picking one with the right formula is a tough task as many claim to be miracle workers in fighting all signs of ageing. But one particular product recently stood out for me thanks to its unique way of taking on anti-aging – Chanel’s Blue Serum promises to stimulate skin youthfulness with a simple, yet powerful formula.
Skin background
I’m turning 27 soon – the optimal time to start an anti-aging routine. While I have already started looking for anti-aging products, for over a year now I’ve had little success in finding the right serum for my skin. Late nights and insomnia, and an unexplainable reluctance to drink water (I know, I know) often leaves my skin sallow. Fine lines have started appearing around my eyes, and I’m starting to notice an uneven skintone (don’t even get me started on the sun spots despite my regular use of sunscreen).
Why it’s supposed to work
Plenty of serums in the market are targeted at battling the effects of aging. It’s an uphill battle, so I’d prefer to look after my current skin condition as a method of preventing aging. To set itself apart from other anti-aging products, Chanel’s Blue Serum formula contains high concentrations of three active ingredients: Lentisk (also known as the mastic tree) from Greece, green coffee from Costa Rica and olives from Sardinia. These active natural ingredients have been chosen because they are part of the diets of those who live in the world’s “blue zones”, home to some of the world’s oldest and healthiest people.
Texture and scent of the serum
You’ve got to love the lightweight texture of this serum, as it absorbs quickly into skin and spreads easily. While it will leave a sticky texture at first, this dries off fast, leaving skin firm and noticeably bouncier. It’s floral scented, so those with fragrance sensitivity might want to do a patch test first. I myself am sensitive to strong scents but had no bad reactions.
The trial
I gave the Chanel Blue Serum a try over the course of a week, and boy, did I love it. To test the serum, I added the extra step into my skincare routine and did not alter my sleeping patterns, diet or drinking habits.
Application
I massaged the Blue Serum onto my skin after cleansing in the morning and evening. To maximise the serum’s absorption into skin, I had to apply it with deep ‘smoothing’ movements according to the brand’s directions. You massage the serum from your jawline to your earlobes, from the corner of your lips to your ears, from your nostrils to your temples, and finally, from the center of your forehead to your temples. It’s suggested that you do this three times each.
Admittedly, I skipped these steps in the morning but quickly learned that adding this massage to my night routine helped me destress before bedtime.
The results
I didn’t expect miracles from a week of use but I was pleasantly surprised to see the visible effects after my trial. The results speak for themselves in the before and after pictures below.
At the start of the week, my skin was dull, uneven and blotchy. My dark spots and undereye circles were also visible.
After a week, my skin looked more radiant and clear, with lighter under eye circles and sun spots. It also felt a lot firmer and bouncier to the touch. It probably won’t surprise you that I now swear by Chanel’s Blue Serum. If one week was all it took for brighter, younger-looking skin, I’ve no problem believing that it’d preserve my skin’s youthfulness with continued and regular use. Watch the video below for a more in depth look at the results.
