In this month’s edition, check out cafes in Singapore serving authentic American food, sweet treats, and specialty coffees and teas in Sentosa, Duxton and Bedok
You can never get bored with the café scene in Singapore. Why? Because exciting new cafés keep popping up on our Instagram feed – and they’re not mundane either. From diners serving All-American menus to hidden gems tucked in the ’hoods, and even one that sells menswear (and surfboards!), these Hot New Cafes will spice up your weekends this April.
One Night Only
Who says you have to travel to the States for Southern-style buttermilk fried chicken in an authentic roadside American diner? Head to the new One Night Only, that pays homage to these classic American institutions of the 1940s. Don’t be deceived by its name; it’s open six days a week and serves American classics such as pancakes topped with Aunt Jemima’s syrup, chicken fried steaks smothered in cream gravy, and all-time favourites, cheeseburgers and milkshakes.
One Night Only, 397 River Valley Road, Singapore 248292, p. 6235 1248. Opens Tues-Fri 12pm-10pm, Sat, Sun and Public Holiday 9am-10pm.
Schmear
Here’s another one that salutes the land of stars and stripes. Instead of heading to the Big Apple to experience a New York delicatessen, go for one right here in Sentosa. Schmear offers drinks like espressos, cold-pressed juices and smoothies, as well as craft beers, wines and Champagnes. Pair your drinks up with NYC faves such as homemade bagels and the New York cheesecake. It’s totally pet-friendly too, so you can pop in with your furry friend!
Schmear, #01-03, 31 Ocean Way, Singapore 098375, p. 6334 3832. Opens Mon, Wed-Fri 8am-10pm, Sat-Sun 8am-2.30pm.
Paper Crane
Tucked within the premises of Singapore’s Council of Women’s Organisation is the cosy-looking Paper Crane. Its menu consists of off-kilter East-meets-West fusion dishes, like kimchi fries with grilled steak and cilantro mayo. All-day deals start from as low as $10, and with no GST or service charge? We’re sold.
Paper Crane, 96 Waterloo Street, Singapore 187967, p. 6837 0836. Opens Mon-Sat 11am-10pm.
RouteSixtySix
If you’re in the East (specifically, around the Bedok area) and need some house-brewed coffee, red velvet waffles and honey lavender ice-cream to perk you up, give RouteSixtySix a go. Named after the well-known US highway (yes, there’s a pattern going on in our Hot New Cafes this mont), this industrial-inspired café offers coffees ranging from $3.50 to $5.50, and waffles starting from $5.90 with flavours such as buttermilk, charcoal and red velvet.
RouteSixtySix, #01-122, 412 Bedok North Ave 2, Singapore 460412, p. 9752 0054. Opens Tues-Thurs 12pm-10pm, Fri & Sun 12pm-11pm, Sat 12pm-12am.
Monument Lifestyle
A retail store that serves specialty coffees? Count us in! This multi-concept store houses fashionable menswear, grooming kits, home décor and even surfboards, and serves Four Barrel coffees and Samovar teas. Its menu also includes pastries and toasts, with spreads like lemon curd, avocado and Nutella. So ladies, why not have your coffee and pastry while waiting for your man to finish his shopping?
Monument Lifestyle, 75 Duxton Road, Singapore 089534. Opens Mon-Fri 8am-7pm.
