We caught up with Montblanc's resident expert watchmaker to get the low-down on everything from tourbillons and chronographs, to design and craftsmanship
Buying a watch is a big deal – a rite of passage, a statement. But when it comes to selecting the perfect piece of wrist candy, the choices are vast and decisions aplenty. To cut through the jargon, sales spiel, and being blinded by bling, we spoke to Montblanc’s master craftsman, Julien Miribel, to get the low-down on what really matters when making your next watch purchase. Don’t know a chronograph from a tourbillon? Fret not! Take it from Julien, buying a watch isn’t nearly as complicated as it seems; there are really only three things you need to take into consideration. Happy shopping!
Design
Buying a watch is a reflection of personal style and taste. Too blingy, and you’ll risk being part of the poor taste brigade. Too big, too small, too complicated; the watch struggle is real! Always choose something that naturally reflects your individual taste and style. Something clean, elegant, and simple will always be timeless (excuse the pun!), and you’ll be able to wear it, whatever the occasion.
Craftsmanship and mechanics
Like most things, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Craftsmanship, useful complications, chronographs, tourbillons; the more you add, the greater the price. But it’s important to buy a watch that you will use! If you don’t need 15 complications, don’t buy the watch.
Value
Watches come at a variety of price points, so just make sure you’re paying for the quality of the watch and its mechanics, rather than a flashy name and bling. If you’re spending over the $5k mark, you should look out for expert craftsmanship, usable complications, and in-house movement.
