Aside from prawns and crabs, another shellfish staple that we’ll contentedly stuff our faces with is mussels – they’re easy to eat, not as briny as oysters, and they’ll go well with just about any sauce. How do we know this? ’Cos we go mad for mussels every time we head to Brussels Sprouts at Robertson Quay for a bucket, simmering mussels in an assortment of sauces such as white wine, blue cheese, lobster bisque and even laksa. We’re not the only ones who swear by this; diners have been patronising this laid-back establishment for 10 years. And to commemorate this past decade of tantalising mussel-mongering, this alfresco restaurant is throwing its first-ever Brussels Sprouts Mussel Festival come July.
Yes, it’s as swell as it sounds. For just one day only on 3 July, you can eat hearty with a free flow of everything – fries, mini Flemish meatballs, grilled vegetable pasta, Belgian beer-marinated chicken wings, and the grand highlight, eight styles of mussels done just the way you like ’em.
Want a clear stock that can double up as a soup? Sip on the Brussels Sprouts Special (blonde beer, onion, parsley, butter, celery, leek and black pepper), Mediterranean or White Wine. Prefer a creamier concoction that you can dip your fries into? You can’t go wrong with the Lobster Bisque, Chicken or Cream and Chardonnay buckets. Or for a spicier Asian kick, the sweet coconut-infused Thai gravy and the chilli padi-stirred Devilled sauce will challenge your taste buds.
And when your tongue is probably burning from the heat, you’ll also be thankful for the free flow of beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic (told you it was free-flow everything!). You’ll never be thirsty with all-you-can-drink Stella Artois, Hoegaarden Rose and White beers, wines in red, white or sparkling, and soft drinks. What’s the catch? You gotta drink (and eat) all you can in two-and-a-half hours. We say, pace yourselves!
