From decadent cakes to deconstructed desserts, here's why we love the Mandarin Cake Shop's latest line-up of sweet treats.
Sweet-toothed Jakarta Honeys know that we’re huge fans of Mandarin Oriental‘s amazing cronuts, so when we were invited over to sample The Mandarin Cake Shop‘s new Spring/Summer cake collection we immediately jumped at the chance. Spoiler alert: we were in dessert heaven.
With recently appointed Executive Pastry Chef Remi Martinazzo at the helm, we were treated to a sweet smorgasbord of his wonderfully unique and at times cheeky creations in both cake and deconstructed dessert form. Let it be known that Chef Remi’s specialty cakes and pastries are true works of art – a testament to the French chef’s history of catering to some of the finest culinary events in London, including a stint at London’s Sketch.
What we loved the most though, was his play on traditional jajanan pasar flavours. Upon his arrival on our side of the world, Chef Remi was immediately intrigued by Indonesian traditional desserts (who isn’t) and local ingredients like pandan and our diverse coffee culture. That’s why the dessert mastermind concocted dishes like the Exotic Coconut Cake – a delightfully rich cake with exotic compote of pineapple, jackfruit and mango, coconut mousse infused with pandan leaves and crunchy coconut sponge; and his Cappuccino Tart – a rich blend of white chocolate and coffee ganache, milk chocolate and coffee Chantilly. Not bad for a chef who has only just step foot in Asia!
No less indulgent are also his takes on comforting flavours like the Salted Caramel Peanut and Chocolate Fudge – hazelnut sponge, soft salted caramel, roasted peanuts and milk chocolate mousse; or his updated classic red velvet creation – a red velvet sponge with vanilla cream cheese and raspberry coulis in red and white chocolate sphere that will really hit your sweet spot.
With Ramadan in full session, it’s also the perfect time to visit The Mandarin Cake Shop and to pick a range of sweet treats like chocolate pralines, truffles and macaroons all prettily packaged in robin blue drawer box to gift your loved ones. Trust us, you’ll be the hit of every social gathering this month! (Just don’t forget to also pick up a selection of their freshly baked petit fours for your secret snack stash.)
