New Year’s resolutions are easy to make, and with our advice, easy to keep. Commit to your resolutions with our suggestions to inspire and motivate you all year long. Cheers to a better 2017!
2016 – what a year! Now that that train wreck is finally over, we’re looking forward to a much better 2017. Fresh, clean slate, new beginnings, that whole sha-bang. To help set yourself up for your BEST YEAR YET, we’re dishing out 10 new year’s resolutions you can ~actually~ keep, plus tips to help you stay committed.
1. Meet new people
There are entire scientific studies dedicated to the hardships of making new friends as an adult (apparently once you hit your late twenties, it’s all downhill from there). To make breaking the ice a little bit easier, try to meet like-minded people by taking a yoga class, learn to dive, volunteer, or embark on an open-trip where you can meet fellow solo travelers and have plenty of interesting things to talk about.
2. Exercise more
The key is to find a workout that you love! Sign up for GuavaPass for wallet-friendly access to all the kinds exciting fitness classes to find out what you do love, and only then stick to your routine. Breaking out in a sweat will be way less of a pain when you have loads of fun doing it.
3. Eat more greens
Trust us, salads don’t have to be a bummer. Case in point: try this awesome butternut squash and tomato salad by the maestro of salads – you can even get organic veggies delivered straight to your doorstep if you’re too busy to make a trip to the market. Lacking knife skills? Then there’s always these awesome clean-eating catering services so you don’t have to lift a finger.
4. Get organized
While you’re setting your intentions for the new year, make it all a little bit more official by writing it down. Why not kick-start 2017 by starting a bullet journal? We even picked out a selection of chic notebooks to get the ball rolling.
2016 sure threw more than a few curveballs at the world, so no wonder meditation is on the rise. If you’ve always wanted to try it, but have been intimidated in the past, apps like Headspace, Calm and Aura break down meditation practice to easy 10 minute exercises – and you’ll get the hang of it in no time. Just plug in those earphones when you’re stuck in traffic, breathe deeply, and let. It. Go. If you want to take your practice to another level, The Golden Space holds regular meditation classes for all levels of practitioners.
6. Use your hands
Make 2017 your most productive year yet and make the most of your free time by indulging in a creative outlet. Instead of falling back into a time and trusted hobby, challenge yourself and mix it up a bit: start an herb garden, learn calligraphy, take up a flower arranging class…just check out these fun workshops for adults.
7. Learn to cook
Whether you’ve always envisioned yourself as a modern-day Julia Child or fancy yourself more of a Chrissy Teagan type, why not finally amass those kitchen skills you’ve been dying to have? We’ll bet you’ll earn extra brownie points from your partner (Valentine’s Day is just around the corner after all).
8. Drink more water
This one’s a breeze. Invest in a stylish bottle that keeps your water cold for the whole day (we’re obsessed with these ones by S’well) so that you’re never left without a cool drink to quench your thirst, and if plain old H2O doesn’t float your boat, shake things up a bit with infused flavours – mint, lemon, lavender, and even rose. Mmm…
9. Get outside
Living in 24/7 summer weather is both a blessing and a curse. Let’s be honest, for us cityfolk, most days are too humid to handle without being safely enclosed in fully blasted AC. However, while the cool artificial breeze is indeed soothing, there’s nothing quite like fresh air.
10. Go on a digital detox
While we do confess that when we’re pretty much huuuge Netflix bingers ourselves, let’s all take a moment to admit that enough is enough. Don’t let trying to cram in entire seasons of Netflix Originals take any more of your weekends. Plan for a quick getaway – no smartphones or laptops allowed – and go off the grid for a couple of days… Go on, we dare you.
