Barcelona is one of the most amazing cities in Europe, full of historic, architectural and artistic importance, and HKAF 2019 highlights the soundscape of the Catalan capital through World Music Weekend
The 47th edition of Hong Kong Arts Festival is bringing some of the most inspiring and delightful artistic endeavours from across the globe to little old Hong Kong right now, and we’ve been enjoying theatre, such as Touching the Void, the Asia Pacific Dance Platform and countless musical acts that make our hearts happy. And you definitely won’t want to miss World Music Weekend happening from 2-3 March at HK Arts Centre in Wan Chai.
Why we’ll be at World Music Weekend: 2-3 March
You know we love to feel the rhythm of the music whenever we can here at Honeycombers, so when HKAF 2019 shared with us all the info about World Music Weekend, we just had to let you in on the good news.
Head over to Shouson Theatre at HK Arts Centre in Wan Chai on Saturday and Sunday and be prepared to be transported to the wonderfully colourful city of Barcelona. This special weekend of concerts will feature a diverse range of musicians from the Catalan city, showcasing performers inspired by folk traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, its surrounding islands, the sounds of Africa, South America and lots, lots more.
Mar 2 (Sat) and 3 (Sun) | 4:30pm
Criatures
Duo Criatures, Catalan for ‘Little Children’, sees Marçal Ramon and Ivo Jorda, a master of the gralla, combine the traditions of Mediterranean folk music with the intimacy of chamber music, they won First Prize in the 2016 Sounds of the Mediterranean contest and will be making their Asian debut.
Càntut by Belda & Sanjosex
Belda & Sanjosex was formed by diatonic accordionist Carles Belda and the lead singer of Barcelona rock band Sanjosex, Carles Sanjosé. Performing modern interpretations of traditional folk music of Northern Catalonia, this project was hailed as the Best Catalan Folk Album of 2016 and entered the Top 20 of the European World Music charts.
2 Mar (Sat) | 8:00pm
Camino by Yexza Lara Trio
Influenced by pop, world music, jazz, progressive rock and the avant garde, Yexha Lara studied jazz at Barcelona’s Conservatori Liceu, and draws on the city’s legendary creative energy to create dynamic soundscapes. For this concert she will perform with alto flautist Pablo Selnik and guitarist Octavio Hernández. The following evening she will also appear in the second trio concert of the weekend with double-bassist Jorge da Rocha.
3 Mar (Sun) | 8:00pm
To Drop and Let Go by Jorge da Rocha Trio
In contrast to his solo performance for the Nouveau Jazz Weekend, for this trio concert Jorge da Rocha will perform original compositions from his 2017 album, first recorded as an intimate dialogue between double bass and voice. This performance develops the music further into a fascinating three-way musical conversation between da Rocha, flutist Yexza Lara and cellist Ana Conceição, a collaboration that promises to be one of the musical highlights of the festival.
If you’ve visited Barcelona, you’ll want to head along and reminisce about the vibrance of the city, and if you’re yet to go, then be sure to check out World Music Weekend to see what treats await you when you finally touch down there on your travels.
