With music ranging from techno and experimental to hip hop, it’s time to get pumped for Sónar Hong Kong 2018 happening this March! See what our top picks are
Whether you’re into local indie bands, music festivals or live music, keep an eye out for Barcelona’s formost electronic music festival Sónar, as it’s returning to Hong Kong Science Park on 17 March with a dazzling feast of mainstream and underground DJs, bands and performers. Featuring a total of five performance stages, audiences are expected to plan their schedule ahead, so here is a guide to some of the must-see acts at Sónar Hong Kong 2018.
Laurent Garnier, Mount Kimbie, Mouse on the Keys
Perfecting a broad range of musical styles, whether it be deep house, trance or jazz, legendary French electronic producer Laurent Garnier often delivers tunes that are beautifully bizarre and unconventional – so it’s worth waiting until midnight to catch his performance.
Post-dubstep group Mount Kimbie strikes me as the biggest appeal of the festival. Their funky and hypnotic tracks, such as Made to Stray and Marilyn, are the perfect escape for when running around busy Hong Kong. If you haven’t checked out their recent collaboration with English musician King Krule, it’s is simply superb!
Also, Japanese jazz-infused post-rock band Mouse on the Keys will be making their second return to Hong Kong at Sónar Hong Kong 2018, and we’re expecting some more earth-shattering material from them.
Squarepusher, Floating Points, Sevdaliza
English electronic musician Squarepusher has been one of the most prominent figures for the past twenty years. Mastering everything from acid house to breakbeat, listeners are guaranteed a progressive space trip from him.
Last but not least, English electronic musician/neuroscientist Floating Points and Iranian-Dutch record producer Sevdaliza are also two of our favourite picks. The extraordinary producer Floating Points, aka neuroscientist Sam Shepherd, has a way around experimental minimal house; while autodidactic singer-songwriter/producer Sevdaliza’s mesmerising performance (and the philosophical reasoning behind her music) will make you lost for words.
Whatever your jam, get set to have a blast at Sónar Hong Kong 2018. See you there!
