Founder of Spring Spa

The unveiling of our spa school is a source of great excitement for us; it signifies promising opportunities for local Balinese individuals aspiring to embark on a career in the wellness industry.
Tell us your story – how did you get here?
As a successful restaurateur for a decade, whilst traveling in search of chefs, I stumbled upon the global appetite for spa treatments. In 2002, spas in New Zealand were in their infancy and I placed my financial resources, energy, passion, and know-how into creating the East Day Spa Wellington. We opened with three staff and a first day turnover of $35.00. It was gut wrenching, but our reputation grew and two years later, we were approached by SkyCity Entertainment Group to operate our flagship spa at their five-star Grand Hotel.
In 2012, we expanded our portfolio by introducing the Spring brand, a creation by the global powerhouse Saatchi & Saatchi. Transforming the concept from a simple suburban salon, we meticulously cultivated a multi-million-dollar business that now boasts nine properties spanning across Bali and New Zealand. This journey has been a testament to our dedication and innovation in the ever-evolving world of spa and wellness.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Surviving the challenges posed by Covid-19 proved to be the most demanding aspect of my professional journey. With a staggering 95% decrease in turnover, the paramount focus shifted to ensuring survival. This impacted my health and wellbeing, yet I found immense support from my management team. What fills me with pride is the successful retention of every staff member — not a single person lost their job. This accomplishment stands as a significant milestone amid the adversity.
What impact have you made in Bali?
Bali has long been renowned for its therapeutic treatments, but Spring Spa, consistently named the best day spa in Indonesia for multiple consecutive years, has emerged as a top priority on tourists’ and locals must-visit lists. Reflecting on the initial idea to establish a presence on the island, I encountered scepticism with remarks like, “Bali is full of spas, why open there?” Yet, Spring Spa has not only set a new standard with its elegant and timeless interiors but has also elevated the spa experience through its exceptional quality treatments.
What does the future look like for you?
The travel industry is witnessing a surge in wellness tourism, emerging as one of its fastest-growing sectors. Anticipating this trend, our company is poised for growth, not only through the introduction of new spa locations, but also with the highly anticipated launch of our purpose-built training facility in Kerobokan during Q2 in 2024. The unveiling of our spa school is a source of great excitement for us; it signifies promising opportunities for local Balinese individuals aspiring to embark on a career in the wellness industry.
What do you love most about Bali?
Bali captivates me in every way imaginable. Even the infamous traffic (which I might grumble about when leaving) becomes a part of the unique charm I miss. Bali is a place that either captures your heart or leaves you indifferent. I first arrived in 2003, nursing a broken heart, and Bali worked its magic, not just mending the wounds but instilling in me a newfound love for this magical island. It’s not a singular element but a myriad of factors – the warm people, rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, the distinctive aroma upon landing, and lately, the vibrant energy that permeates everything from yoga and wellness to restaurants, beaches, and the outer islands. For me, there’s no place in the world that compares to Bali. I am an unabashed and devoted fan!
What do you do to de-stress and unwind?
Swimming (in a pool that is, I’m scared of the sea). It’s an early morning ritual for me, waking up and into the pool before 6.30am. It’s a great way to start the day, and my beautiful garden is also coming to life, with a symphony of cicadas and birdsong creating a natural morning orchestra.
In addition to my pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, I lead by example as a spa owner. My weekly self-care routine involves indulging in spa treatments that include a rejuvenating deep tissue massage, a deep pore cleansing CODAGE facial, and a bi-monthly hair facial.
Who is your Local Legend and why?
Meet Kadek Dirga, the visionary behind Kadecons and my trusted business partner. Our camaraderie dates to 2016 when Kadek came to my rescue, saving me from a dubious contractor. Since then, he has played a pivotal role in the conception and construction of all Spring Spas.
As the challenges of the Covid era unfolded, Kadek and I decided to venture into property development, giving rise to the esteemed brand, Spring Villas. Our inaugural development in Canggu witnessed a swift sell-out, and our latest project in Seseh is currently 75% sold.
Pak Kadek is no ordinary entrepreneur; holding degrees in both architecture and engineering, he oversees a workforce of over 1000 individuals. Despite his impressive achievements, he exudes humility and maintains a serene demeanour. To me, he is more than a business partner – he is a Local Legend!
