You’re invited to a zi char party on 4 March – and no, we’re not just referring to your everyday meal of Chinese home-cooked grub. To kick off Singapore Design Week, multi-label store and design studio, kapok, is throwing their Come Makan La! party to celebrate art, local food and culture. The centrepiece of the event is its collaboration with MadebyTofu for The Design Cookout: an interactive design installation featuring the national food staple.

Here’s how the exhibit works. Visitors will connect the dots to reveal a hidden surprise within a massive zi char box, using red rubber bands (yet another normal feature of Singapore life) to loop onto nails on the exhibition wall. It’s an artwork that’s guaranteed to change repeatedly and promises to have you look at everyday objects in a different way.
But the night hardly stops there – aside from feasting out on actual zi char, you’re invited to meet the creative minds behind HDB Homes of Singapore, a book which showcases 118 portraits of heartland life in the local properties. The artist duo, Eitaro Ogawa and Tamae Iwasaki of keyakismos, and architect Tomohisa Miyauchi, will even be present to sign your copies.
But don’t sweat it if you can’t make the party on 4 March – the exhibit is open to visitors from 3 March to 3 April, so you can swing by any time to makan all the culture in this pop-up affair.
The Come Makan La! party is happening on 4 March, 6pm-9pm at kapok at National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road. The Design Cookout: Take away the Tze Char box exhibit is open to visitors from 3 March to 3 April from 11am to 9pm.
