The wagyu of ducks have landed in our shores at this new Chinese restaurant
Make no mistake: this new Chinese restaurant has no affiliation to Heston Blumenthal (we wish), but its main attraction (no prizes for guessing what it is) is totally worth sinking your teeth into. Inspired by Four Seasons and Gold Mine at Bayswater London, London Fat Duck serves juicy, melt-in-your-mouth roasted duck of a specific breed that are flown in from Ireland and prided as the “wagyu of ducks”.
We started the night with their generous, half-portion of their signature roast duck, which has a good proportion of fat and meat. It was perfectly marinated to cover any gamey taste free-range meats tend to have. Come here for a fun office get-together or a casual date; the duck is served in three different portions: $12.80 for regular, $26 for half, and $48.80 for whole. Another must-order is London Fat Duck’s utterly divine Char Siew (barbecue pork with honey sauce). Nicely charred and caramelised, the simple dish was so good, we wanted to cry a little bit with every bite.
London Fat Duck also serves a good array of Cantonese side dishes including a piquant black pepper duck bun ($4.80 for three). Be greeted by a spicy, thick black pepper sauce and chunky pieces of duck as you sink your teeth in to the buttery bun; the bun is slightly toasted and has a layer of charcoal crust that crumbles in your mouth. We were also pleasantly surprised by the chee cheong fun (steamed rice rolls) Unlike the usual steamed rice rolls served in dim sum joints, it has a thin layer of fried rice skin – similar to a spring roll – giving the dish a nice crispy texture.
Head there early to snag a table – we went there on a Tuesday evening and there was already a queue forming at 7pm. We heard the queue could take up to 45minutes, even on weeknights!
