New Year (shogatsu), is one of the country’s most important holidays and it traditionally involves a visit to the temple close to midnight on New Year’s Eve. A boisterous cultural exchange
On 1 January, say kanpai to 2017 during a sake barrel opening ceremony that’s also known as Kagami Biraki. This auspicious ritual is believed to bring good fortune when a wooden sake barrel is broken with a hammer, so don’t miss this smashing start to the year! The festivities continue on to the next day, where a rip-roaring Japanese lion dance will take place, followed by a traditional mochi pounding showcase (mochitsuki).
While you’re there, don’t forget to write your new year’s wish on a prayer plaque, which are sold at $5 each – the plaques will then be displayed on a wishing wall in the mall, with proceeds benefiting the Community Chest charity organisation.
