In this month's edition of Hot New Cafes: Chimney Singapore, Brothers in Fine Food, Oh My Café, and Kiss The Tiramisu
It’s practically common knowledge that Singapore is a cafe-nation, and 2016 has definitely managed to sustain our addiction to brunch, coffee, desserts and all that’s in between. With the rise of cafés popping up within the vicinity of our bustling CBD, as well as quaint residential neighbourhoods throughout the year, here are five more Hot New Cafes in Singapore for you to explore before we bid farewell to 2016.
Sugarhaus
The now defunct Bing Qi Lin which was formerly located at Jalan Selasah has recently undergone a major overhaul, shifted to a new spot at Serene Centre, and has been renamed as Sugarhaus. Aside from its alluring minimalist interior decked with wooden walls and furnishings, this cafe also boasts a great selection of soft-serve ice-creams as well as cakes. Not sure what to get \? Order the hot-seller galaxy cake which is made of taro sponge cake and buttercream, or get its Gula Melaka Pecan with handmade Choux pastry bun. And don’t forget to complete your cafe experience with a toasty cuppa Joe brewed from the blends by Liberty Coffee.
Sugarhaus, #01-03A Serene Centre, 10 Jalan Serene Singapore 258748, p. 6314 2247. Open daily 12pm-10pm.
Oh My Café
Journey to the West, and discover a Korean cafe at Westgate that serves more than just bingsu. For those who are truly fixated with taking pics of #whatiatetoday, you’ll be glad to know that Oh My Café offers a slew of Instagrammable drink options. Our top pick has to be the light bulb drinks ($5.40) – fruity flavoured juices in bright colours that are presented in a light bulb container, together with a straw that has a mini light-bulb (that glows!) attached to it. You can also up your hipster game by getting your juices served in adorable Mason jars. #foodporn indeed.
Oh My Café, #B1-01, Westgate, 3 Gateway Drive, Singapore 608532.
Chimney Singapore
Confession: We’re big suckers for anything new, unique and trendy – which is why we’re truly ecstatic that the delicious Hungarian pastry called Kürtőskalács, that has recently taken the Internet by storm, has finally landed on our sunny island. Made by rolling sweet, yeast dough into a cylindrical pastry which is then stuffed and eventually baked ’til golden brown, this traditional Eastern European pastry (commonly known as Chimney cakes) is a new snack worth stuffing your face with. You’ll be treated to both sweet ($3) and savoury ($3.50) chimney cakes with a smorgasbord of additional toppings ($1 each) to choose from – think nutella spread, peanut butter, cream cheese, chicken ham, turkey bacon and even salted egg. But the hot-seller here is definitely its chimney cake with soft serve ($4.50), a perfect “hot-and-cold” dessert that’s certainly worth the hype.
Chimney Singapore, #02-02, *SCAPE, 2 Orchard Link, Singapore 237978, p. 9478 3164. Open Mon-Fri 12pm-9pm; Sat & Sun 12pm-10pm.
Brothers in Fine Food
Brought to you by the folks behind the famous Penny University, Brothers in Fine Food provides creative, palate-pleasing cafe nosh at affordable prices. Must-tries on the menu include its 48-hour braised beef ribs served with polenta fries called iga batar; the beef steak drizzled in bright pink beetroot purée that adds a sweet, tangy kick to the dish; and the elegant Greek yoghurt panna cotta for dessert. Granted, this cafe’s a bit far off in the East of the isle, but it’s certainly worth a stopover if you’re in the area.
Brothers in Fine Food, #02-07, Tampines West Community Club, 5 Tampines Avenue 3, Singapore 529705, p. 9008 9314. Open Tue-Fri 12pm-10.30pm; Sat & Sun 9am-10.30pm. Closed on Mon.
Kiss The Tiramisu
From the famous shopping district of Hongdae in Seoul to the bustling streets of Siam Square in Bangkok, Kiss The Tiramisu has finally made its way to our shores. Tucked at a corner in orchardgateway, Kiss The Tiramisu has attracted monstrous queues since its opening, with many falling in love with its toothsome tiramisu offerings such as tiramisu cakes and its popular tiramisu ice-cream served in a chic-looking wine glass. You can also choose a flavour for your tiramisu – we recommend the green tea flavour if you’re looking for a Japanese twist. But we’re positive that its banana, berry and mango flavours can do no wrong as well. Time to beat the heat with this tasty treat!
Kiss The Tiramisu, #01-15 orchardgateway, 277 Orchard Road, Singapore 238858.
