Volunteering with your dog
‘Tis the season for giving. The holiday season is here and with it, comes inspiration to give back to others. Did you know that you and your pup can team up as a volunteer duo? Here are some ways you and your furry friend can begin reaching out to others – any time of year.
Therapy Dogs Singapore
The wagging tail. The unconditional, adoring gaze. The dancing and prancing when you walk through the door. These simple doggie delights are just a few ways your pup makes you smile each day. Why not share that happiness with others who could use it?
If your dog is friendly, well-behaved, patient, and loves people (and if you tick those boxes too), you may have all the makings of an excellent therapy team. All your dog needs to do is pass a temperament test and a health check, and then you’re both on your way to spreading the love.
Therapy dog activities can be as simple as snuggling up to a patient and warming a lap, or more advanced skills such as helping a patient to walk or playing specific games.
Therapy Dogs Singapore works with a number of different beneficiaries so if Rover has a knack with children or maybe he prefers the company of the elderly, there’s a home to suit everyone’s interest.
Donate Blood
It’s a regular ritual for many of us — the bloodmobile comes around, and we roll up our sleeves to give blood for the injured and sick. Well, it turns out animals need blood transfusions too, and for all the same reasons as humans. Your dog can give the gift of life just like you do. For doggie blood donations, speak to your veterinarian to find out more about what’s involved and to see if your pup is a good candidate.
Provide a Foster Home
Many rescue dogs at animal shelters need a little socialising or just some time to recover from an illness before they can be adopted out to a loving home. You and your darling can help these pets-in-training transition to a forever home and feel more comfortable around people and other animals by temporarily taking them in and showing them the ropes. Check with these local rescue organisations for fostering opportunities.
Fundraising Events
Here’s another opportunity for you and your best canine buddy to spend some time together – all for a good cause. Rescue organisations often raise money by holding events that include your pup – everything from dog walks and runs, to tea parties and dinners.
