Tim Ho Wan
Snaking queues for Michelin star worthy dim sum? If you’ve been to Plaza Singapura you’ll soon realize how seriously Singapore takes its dim sum – we’re talking a wait of at least 30 minutes (off-peak). And try 60-90 minutes during lunch or dinner service. We’re glad to report that the food here is worth the wait and growling tummies – and won’t break the piggybank either! Don’t leave without trrying the 4 Heavenly Kings – their signature Char Siew Bun, Cheong Fan with Pig’s Liver, Pan-fried Carrot Cake, and Steamed Egg Cake.
Tim Ho Wan, Plaza Singapura 68 Orchard Road #01-29A, Singapore 238839 Open daily 10am-10pm.
SUR Nuevo Latino Kitchen
**CLOSED AS OF OCTOBER 2013**
OK, this isn’t the newest kid on the block – but if you’re looking for quality South American food, get here now! This homey restaurant serves authentic and outstanding fare – it’s a total crime if you don’t order the Chicharrones (crispy pork belly) and the various ceviche. It gets crowded so make sure you book ahead.
SUR Nuevo Latino Kitchen, 13 North Canal Road #01-01, Singapore 048826, p. 6222 2897. Open Mon-Fri 1130am-3pm, 530pm-1030pm, Sat 530-1030pm.
A for Arbite
Arbite at Serangoon Gardens is a well-kept secret (especially for its great weekend brunch), which is why we can’t wait to visit A for Arbite, the offshoot of the popular casual bistro. Bring a crowd here – it’s a sharing plates concept so you’ll need the gang to polish off the meal! PS. Boozehounds, the Belgian craft beers will be right up your alley.
A for Arbite, 28 Aliwal Street #01-01, Singapore 199918, p. 8321 2252. Open Tue-Fri 1130am-230pm, 5-11pm, Sat 11am-11pm, Sun9am-9pm.
8 at Green
We were sad to see our beloved Bronte go, but we’re always up for some good ol’ Italian. 8 at Green has retained much of Bronte’s casual interiors while offering an accessible and highly palatable menu. Highlights include pork knuckle, wagyu ribeye, seafood aglio olio, and chocolate pudding.
8 at Green, 8 Greenwood Avenue, Bukit Timah, Singapore 289198, p. 6219 9151. Open Tue-Thu & Sun 12-1030pm, Fri-Sat 12-1145pm.
We’re pretty big on Thai food but our options tend to fall into two categories: cheap, homey joints, or expensive fine-dining restos. Now there’s Folks Collective, located in the heart of the CBD, that not only serves up mid-range Thai options but also gives us our vintage furniture kick. Score! Psst- those who aren’t big on Thai food can still get a little some’n some’n here – all you need to do is ask.
Commune Bistro
Tucked away in Phoenix Park is Commune Bistro, the cafe arm of the Verita group. True to its philosophy, the menu is nourishing, the cuisine clean, and much to our delight, extremely palatable. The juice and smoothie menu is ace for regular juicers. Popular items include the soba salad and beef pho. Psst – this cozy eatery has a different dinner menu (it’s entirely Vietnamese), so it’s worth coming back for seconds.
Commune Bistro, 308 Tanglin Road, Phoenix Park, Singapore 247974, p. 6235 9008. Open Tue 10am-3pm, Wed 10am-3pm & 6-10pm, Sat 10am-4pm & 6-10pm, Sun 10am-4pm.
Bacchanalia
The champagne brunch poppers of the city are not joking around. WIth Chef Ivan Brehm (formerly from Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck) helming the kitchen, the menu is fine-dining without the hefty pricetags – and there’s no cutting corners here either. Lounge in the ultra luxe dining area and feast on duck confit, HD scallops, and aubergine assam.
Bacchanalia, 23A Coleman Street, Singapore 179806, p. 6509 1453. Open Mon-Thu 12-3pm 6pm-12am, Fri 12-3pm 6pm-2am, Sat 6pm-2am. Updated: Closed on Sundays.

Daruma Ramen House
And the ramen craze continues. Inspired by Kyushu, Daruma churns out full-bodied tonkotsu broth, boiled for 8-10 hours from quality pork bones. This signature broth combined with braised pork belly, barbecued pork and mentaiko has gained plenty of fans, including Hong Kong singer, Eason Chan.
