Add festive cheer to your home with our guide to the best places for all things Christmas in Jakarta
Nothing quite puts the festive cheer into your home than a wonderful Christmas tree decorated with twinkle lights and sparkly ornaments galore. Mmm, just planning ahead makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside! It may not always be easy trying to put together a festive Christmas in the tropics (who’s tried to explain to their kids how Santa will enter the house without a fireplace?) but we came up with this handy dandy guide to Christmas decorating to get you in the mood. Fireplace or not, we guarantee you this Christmas will be the merriest one yet!
We’ll start with the basics because, well, there aren’t that many places you can find a real pine tree in Jakarta. Any shopping mall or major supermarket will most likely stock a few plastic or LED trees, (hey at least these are reusable!), but there’s nothing like the fresh piney scent of a real Christmas tree. Here they’re called pohon cemara, and they are a rare breed indeed. Venture off to Jalan Barito area in South Jakarta where all the plant shops are, or you can go all the way to Jalan Raya Sanggrahan in West Jakarta to pick out a tree still freshly planted in the field. All you have to do is tell the guys which tree you want and they’ll deliver it over to your house.
Pohon Cemara Natal. Jln. Raya Sanggrahan No. 26, Kembangan Selatan, West Jakarta. Call Yoseph at +62 87 887 6363 99.
Not just where you can get your Christmas ham (or turkey)! KemChicks and Ranch Market have a fabulous round-up of shiny ornaments, huge stockings (not that you’ll have a fireplace to hang them over), and more Christmassy bits and bobs to decorate your house in. The main KemChicks in Kemang Raya even has a dedicated corner to seasonal offerings right at the entrance, so you definitely can’t miss it.
Lino Luna and Shop Deca are two Indonesia-based home decor websites that have an awesome selection of ornaments and Christmas-themed stationary that you can use to wrap your gifts. Meanwhile, ever the one-stop-shop Lazada really has everything from affordable twinkle lights, plastic Christmas trees and cheerful Christmas stockings.
