Bagan, the third largest city in Myanmar is known as the Disneyland of temples, and with over 3,000 temples scattering its horizon, Bagan leaves Siem Reap and Borobudur for dead. Here’s why Bagan needs to be on your 2014 bucket list:
1. Stunning sunsets
Choose from a hot air balloon, a pagoda or cruising the Irrawaddy River, and then get set for a majestic sunset (or sunrise) experience. With thousands of temples dotting the landscape, there is really nothing like seeing the bright red sun light up this unique skyline.
2. Time stands still
Horse drawn cart through the city anyone? With many roads still dirt, most business signs made of wood, and abundant open-air craft and lacquer workshops – visiting Bagan is like taking a step back in time. Literally. With over 3122 ancient buildings – from pagodas stupas, temples, ordination halls, monasteries and learning caves – there is a lot of history to soak in.
3. Oh so quiet
With very few cars, this is one of the last cities of Asia that is incredible peaceful and quiet. With just bicycles, monks walking by, and every now and then a motorbike – Bagan makes for a surreal urban experience.
4. Find your zen
With 65,000 monks, and the air filled with not much more than bells of temples chiming, this is one spiritual land where almost anyone can find their zen.
5. Beat the crowds
Ok so there is a downside. Myanmar’s tourist population is doubling year on year. So if you want to enjoy this majestic part of the world, you need to do it before the crowds set in. Peak season is October to April, when it’s cooler. It can be crowded with European tourists July-August.
